mate . I can only say that every trophy in Fury ’ s collection was wellearned !
Mrs . Smith introduced me to a fine young couple from Crystal Lake , Illinois , JOHN and JOAN KRUMM . They are now managing the famous old Thunderbird Quarter Horse Ranch and own several Walking Horses . Among these is a red roan yearling stallion , Sunset Heir , who , with his four white stockings and bald face , bears a striking resemblance to Sun ’ s Xmas Tree of Redmond , Washington . They ’ ve bred a couple of their mares to Sun Dust Fury , and the colts , if they follow in their father ’ s footsteps , should be tops in the show field .
A fine up-and-coming Junior stallion is Huston ’ s Trouble . This black four-year-old , sired by Troubles and capably shown by his owmer-trainer Mr . LEONARD HUSTON of Tinley Park , placed well in both the Open and Junior classes . He shows a great deal of promise and we can expect to see his name at the top of the judges ’ scorecards in the near future .
Carmarin Mandate , owned by Mrs . R . C . OUDENHOVEN , Green Bay , Wisconsin , took second in the Amateur Class , after coming from a spectacular win at the Madison ( Wisconsin ) show . First place in the Junior Class and second in the Open went to Shadow ’ s Mardelle , guided by her owner , MARVIN SHIELDS . The next day I drove out to ED JOHNSON ’ S Windy Hill Farm in Mokena , Illinois and had a long chat with Mrs . WILMA MARTIN from Crown Point , Indiana . She has a beautiful four-year-old roan mare , Tiptop Honeygold II , who has possibly the longest and silkiest mane and tail I ’ ve ever seen . Mrs . Martin rode her for me and then put me up . I was really surprised at the mare ’ s excellent manners and smooth way of going . It was , indeed , a pleasure to ride her , in every sense of the word . Mrs . Martin has not yet decided whether or not to show her but , in my opinion , Honeygold will be outstanding in any pursuit .
FLASH ! Mr . and Mrs . GEORGE WELLS of Cicero , Illinois , owners of the Bombardier ’ s Son , have been transferred to St . Louis , Missouri . Bombardier is now in the capable hands of REX BIRKSHIRE . We are very sorry to see this fine stallion leave the area .
WALKIN ' WEST
Bea Walker 10300 Calvine Road
Sacramento 3 , California
May 1965 saw the newest Walking Horse training facility opened at 2100 Riego Road , Sacramento . Mr . ART FINE leased the beautiful Bill Howard quarter horse barn for working and training Tennessee Walking Horses . What a barn ! The stalls are 16 x 16 , and there is an indoor arena ( so important during those long wet winter months ), plus the nice big outside ring . Though Mr . Fine is new at the location , he ’ s not unknown to Walking Horse owners , breeders , and exhibitirs , and is offering a complete facility for training , boarding , and breeding these horses . Mr . Fine is working both show and pleasure horses — one of his clients , MARJORIE LONG , rode her big gelding into the first place spot during the Open Pleasure Class at the California State Fair .
Mr . Fine has moved BEA WALK ER ’ S big black Midnight Sun stallion , Midnight Kid , to his barn to stand at public service . He contracted to stand the horse after viewing the stallion ’ s first California colt crop , taking note that all mares brought to his court in 1964 foaled to his service in 1965 , giving the stud a 100 % crop .
Mr . Fine extends an open invitation to drop by , see the barn , and watch the horses work .

HERSHEL TALLEY STABLES
The HERSHEL TALLEY Stables in Baileyton , Alabama is a beehive of activity these days , as the show season picks up steam heading for the Celebration . Hershel , who was one of the judges last year , will be very much in evidence again this year , except that he will be on the rail riding some of his top stock . Headliner at Talley Stables at this time is Duke ’ s Handyman , a black aged stud that is making an excellent reputation for himself and for owner Mrs . CLAUD LAWSON of Birmingham , Alabama . Another feature attraction , and one of the most highly-touted Junior Horses in the land , is Clown ’ s Spur , a bay threeyear-old stallion that is owned by Mr . W . O . CRAWFORD , Mr . S . W . COLEMAN and Hershel Talley . This brilliant show horse has followed his 1964 victories at Mobile , Jackson and Montgomery with five blues in a row as a Junior Horse this year .
In the two-year-old class , Hershel is showing Clown Lil Cheatham , a fancy roan filly with a big lick , owned by Mr . JACK COLLINS of Bessemer , Alabama . She has been shown three times this year and has two blues and a red in top competition . Some other leading show horses in training are Clown ’ s Image , a sorrel stud colt that is just about ready for show ring activity owned by Mr . and Mrs . JIM YEAGER of Blountsville and Hershel Talley , and Clown ’ s Rebel Ace , a black two-year-old stud colt that is doing well for owner OZIE COOK .
Representing the Talley Stables in Juvenile Classes is JANE YEA GER , riding Eldo ’ s Sunset , which she has shown four times to win two blues , second , and third . She has a
