TiPS ON TRAINING By JOE WEBB
QUESTION: How much attention should be given to a young colt that you plan to break and ride as a two-year-old?
ANSWER: For his own protection, it is well to begin to gentle and halter-break a colt whenhe is only three or four days old. A gentle colt entangled in barbed ware, or in any other precarious position, is much less likely to injure himself farther while you are trying to remove him than a colt who is shy and not used to being handled. However, the colt should not be handled too much. And he should never be teased or played with to the extent that he becomes spoiled. It would be better to let him run wild in the pasture until breaking than to spoil him. A successful trainer must have the respect of any animal he works with, and a spoiled colt has no respect for anyone. Let the colt know from the beginning that you are engaged in a serious business, and that you are the one in command— not through sudden fits of anger or brutality, but through firmness, kindness, and patience.

PROBLEMS!!
Fred E. Friend
BUD DUNN has a problem. Dr. and Mrs. B. S. HENRY have a problem. Pert and pretty Miss JANIS HENRY has a problem, too. Let’ s start with Janis, mainly because she’ s the best-looking( with due respect to her charming mother, of course).
What is Janis’ problem? Well, it’ s like this: Once upon a time she could show a beautiful, black, wellbred stallion with gaits such as you seldom see on a young horse. But the horse got too good— he became truly Stake Horse quality, and so now Janis must settle for the role of cheerleader and official worrier as her Go Boy’ s Sundust racks up victory after victory on the way to his rendezvous with destiny in the Big Ring. With no horse to show, Janis has betaken herself back to Vanderbilt for summer school. But you just try to keep her away from the Saturday night shows!
Well, with a horse like Go Boy’ s Sundust in his stables, what kind of problem does Bud Dunn have? Just this: Every time he shows this horse he has to leave in the stall a horse that some folks are saying is the better of the two. Diplomatic Bud isn’ t committing himself too far either way, but he does admit that Sun Dust Perfection is " a whale of a good horse.” This big stallion is also black, well-bred, and hits a wonderful lick. Now, wouldn’ t it be something if
