NORTHWEST CORNER ( Conld .) there and left with Mr . Webb for further training , had been shown and placed in his class at the Celebration . Also , we watched the stallion , DELIGHTFUL SUNSET , take all the honors in the open and stake classes . I got so excited watching him that “ Speed ” thought I was going to jump right out of my seat !” — That ’ s one thing I ’ ve noticed about Walking Horse owners , they are generous in their praise of Walkers other than their own . Some of this generosity stems from the fact that they are secure in the knowledge that the Walkers they have right in their own stables are the best in the world for their purposes !
The Archie Stalevs ’ have SE CRET VENTURE and their 2 year old filly , LITTLE BEE WILSON in training at the Charles Court Stables , The Dalles , Oregon , this winter . They are expecting 6 purebred Walkers this spring from their good mares .
The V . J . Bassani ’ s recently purchased a fine 4 vear old mare , PAT ’ S BAY MARGARET , from the Mitzi-Lew Stables , Creswell , Oregon . The Bassani ’ s are new neighbors of ours , and this is their first Walker . I have a little private bet , it won ’ t be their last . Charles Court is working her , and she ’ s really coming along !
And speaking of Mitzi - Lew Ranch , they really had a “ to-do ” about the weather ! They too were in a “ disaster area .” Their ranch is located on the banks of the Williamette river , and , in places that river was 10 feet over flood stage . It was necessary to evacuate the nearby town of Creswell . Manager , Chester Gillespie , and Mitzi and Lew were busy night and day finding places to move their horses , and moving them . This is not an easy task even with a mere dozen or so horses , when all conditions are most favorable . But , in the midst of winter , in blizzard weather . with most main highways “ washed out ,” others covered with sheets of ice , just try to move some 70 stabled horses and the many “ pasture ” horses , all the time sloshing around in water knee deep ! “ Town and Country ” would no doubt have been moved right into the Williams ’ bedroom , but it looked like the house would be under water too . The indoor show ring was covered with 2 feet of water at the peak of the flood . A situation like this is no mere inconvenience , it ’ s a calamity . Knowing the Williams , and Chester Gillespie , I ’ m sure they will come thru it all with flying colors . One thing is certain , if friends could help , they ’ ve had lots of help , for they have made friends all over the country from East to West and North to South .
The Washington State Open Horse Show , Inc . held it first membership meeting December 3 . This is a non-profit corporation , whose primary purpose is to assure the continuity of the Show and School . James Tonkin was elected president . Other officers are : Dr . Robert Penney , vice-president ; Don Northrop , treasurer ; Walter Weeks , corporate secretary . Board members are : James Fletcher , Dr . Albert Bostrom , Mrs . John Moore , Dr . Paul Rider , Lloyd Hammerstad , Jack Webb and Larry Saar . James Fletcher was selected as Manager for the 1965 Show and School . The dates of May 28 , 29 , and 30th have been reserved for the show at the Central Washington Fairgrounds in Yakima . Washington State University has expressed again the desire to sponsor the Judging School and will work closely with John Griffith of the Yakima Valley College and the Horse Show Committee . Mr . Wayne Kesterson of the Fair Board has given assurance that the ground level in the ring will be improved and that some of the stalls will be repaired . ( We hope so !) Some of the Horse Show Committee are working on a better lighting arrangement for the ring . This has been needed for years . Maybe with this enthusiastic support , this will be the year it becomes a reality !
