EDITOR ' S COLUMN
It is our candid opinion that if the Walking Horse business is to expand and grow to the mutual benefit of everyone . . . we must concentrate on the expansion of the market especially in those areas where the breed is not now thriving . To our knowledge , the most overlooked ( and there are others ) and potentially great market for this noble breed is the vast area from the Mid-West to California . There is a real need for more good stables , top trainers and top breeding stallions in this area than anywhere in the nation .
We would like to suggest that we all concentrate less on the areas of the market that are already developed and aim toward those areas that are wide open . We have done a lot of thinking regarding this matter and realize that there are many problems to be overcome .
It is true that there are two or three basic areas of activity in which the Tennessee Walking Horse excels . ( 1 ) As a pleasure Horse ; ( 2 ) As a utility horse on ranches and farms ; ( 3 ) As a show horse . In our opinion , these three areas of activity complement each other . If we develop an interest in the Tennessee Walking Horse as a pleasure horse in some of these new areas , we will soon see an increase in horse show activity for the Walking Horse as well as an increase in interest for the horse as a utility mount . This in turn will create a need for more good broodmares and of course more top breeding stallions . The result ? Better and better colts in the outlying areas of the country , an expanding market , better prices for good stock and increased activity at all levels .
One thing we would like to point out is that we realize that our beloved Middle Tennessee will always be recognized as the “ cradle of the breed ” and whenever superb animals are demanded that this will probably be the place that people will come . This does not alter the fact that good horses can be bred and raised in other parts of the country also .
