SHADOW ’ S MINUETTE . I have also a 3 year old gelding . SHAD OW ’ S MAGIC , a dark chestnut with speed and motion like an aged horse . We still have MIDNIGHT SPOOK , the gelding who was fifth in the celebration and will be trying for the World Champion Gelding next year . He took the “ blue " at the Carolina Walking Horse Celebration . CAPTAIN APPLE JACK . a five year old gelding will be shown in the juvenile class with his owner Betty Blount . They make a very striking and winning team each time they go into the ring . They won the Ladies ’ and Juvenile classes at the Carolina Celebration . Mr . Blount has bought COLLEGE DIPLOMA from Sherrill Marks of Eldorado , Ark . and will be ridden in the amateur classes next year by Ferrell Blount . June Teich of Havelock , N . C ., won the Limited Class at the Carolina show on SHADOW ’ S MIN- ELLO , purchased from the Wink Groover Stables . MINELLA is owned by Mr . and Mrs . Walter Teich . June will be showing MINELLA and CONQUEROR in the juvenile and amateur classes next year . Mr . and Mrs . Sonny Brown and Jean of Tarboro , North Carolina have bought them a new amateur horse , a seven year old gelding by MID NIGHT SUN . Jean Brown and her new gelding are coming along fine . H . P . Snipes of Goldsboro has two studs in training , one by MERRY GO BOY , a black colt with a lot of promise . The other is a chestnut stud by a MIDNIGHT SUN horse . Clayton Carson still has his good amateur horse , BEWARE , by SOU- VENIER , and is still for sale .
Our best to Dude Crowder and all his fine customers in the Carolinas . We hope to see a lot of them all during the 1965 show season . BATTLEGROUND STABLES
Occasionally we have time to visit our own home stables and get caught up on the activities there . Battleground Stables in Fort Oglethorpe , Georgia , is experiencing the same type of busy activity as most other training barns at this time of year . Trainer Billy Brantley has his hands full with twentyfour horses under saddle . He has a good crop of eleven two year old colts , outstanding among which are BIG SHOT ’ S T BIRD , a big baystallion owned by Mr . and Mrs . Billy ' Joe Robinson of Chattanooga , SUN ’ S ROYAL SCOTT , a liver chestnut stallion owned by Mr . E . P . Riley of Gainesville , Georgia , SUN ’ S LINDA , a well - known champion weanling and yearling colt , owned by Mr . and Mrs . Dan T . Clippinger of Chattanooga and GLORY BOUND A , a sorrel stud colt owned by Paul and Steve Cole of Dalton , Georgia .
In the Junior classes this year , the front runner bearing the Battleground banner will , of course , be the popular 1964 World Champion Two Year Old , SETTING SUN ’ S APOLLO . The “ not so little ” red sorrel with the flying white mane and tail has taken his canter well and is reported to be in excellent shape for the coming year . Owners Dr . and Mrs . Eugene B . Sliger are very pleased .
In the Junior Mare class , Billy will have a real surprise in the form of SHADOW ’ S WIND SONG , a Black Mare owned by Mrs . L . O . Ledford of Rossville , Ga ., that was held out last year . She could be a real threat ! Also in the Junior class , though not considered ready at this time , is a full brother of MACK K ’ S BIG STORY . Known as SUNDAY PUNCH , and owned By Dr . and Mrs . Eugene B . Sliger , this golden sorrel could be one of the great horses of the breed in coming years . Trainer Brantlev will also be showing GO BOY ’ S FIRST LADY in Junior Mare Classes , although owner L . O . Ledford has been working the black mare for some limited Amateur Class competition .
In stake class competition Billy will be showing SUN DUSTER , a big going stallion , which beat some of the best Junior Horses around last year . Owned by Friend and Brantley , SUN DUSTER should make a strong bid for top honors this year . In the juvenile class this year Billy will have eleven year old Miss Pam Clippinger of Chattanooga , riding SIR HENRY ’ S LADY LEE , an experienced show ring performer that should carry her rider to many ribbons and much excitement .
STABLE NEWS FROM KENTUCKY
In a recent letter from Mrs . A1 White , Georgetown , Kentucky , we received the following first-hand report on some personal “ Barnstorming ” news and wish to pass it along to our readers :
“ Dear Sir , Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the plush Kibler Farms , Mt . Orab , Ohio , owned by Mr . and Mrs . D . O . Kibler , and managed by the very efficient Tom Bohl . Their sharp young trainer , who has the Walking Horse world buzzing , is Paul “ Whitey ” Whitehead . He has some of the most impressive horses I have seen in some time . One of the best is a 3 year old black mare , TOUCH OF VELVET , a half-sister to the famous BLACK VELVET .
Also . . . watch for SIMION , a four year old black stud that is dynamite , and RHYTHM ’ S RED FLASHER , a four year old stud by BLACK RHYTHM . He is really something to see . He is Celebration material at it ’ s best . One of the most impressive horses in the barn is WELLS FARGO , Tom Bohl ’ s amateur horse . They go together like peaches and cream . Whitey and his able assistant , Bob Morris keep things rolling smoothly . They are also working some outside horses that are looking great .
Another Walking Horse Stable that is going great guns is owned by Mr . Clarence Geeslin of Georgetown , Ohio , located on the fairgrounds . He has some blue ribbon horses that are kept in tip-top shape by Mr . and Mrs . Jay Cobb . Watch for them in the spring .
My husband and I had the pleasure of having as our guest for the weekend , Mr . A . R . Gordon , Jr . of Harrisburg , Kentucky . He is one of Kentucky ’ s most noted Walking
