JUDY’S JOTTINGS
By Judy Byers
Killen, Alabama
In January, I was invited to
spend the day with Hugh Hester
and family of Red Bay, Alabama.
They have built a big barn next
to their home and feed and egg
business. They have had Walk
ing Horses for just about a year
but have acquired quite a herd
to fill the new barn in that short
time. Besides the broodmares and
colts, they have in training three
amateur and juvenile horses with
E. L. O’Callaghan of Tupelo, Mis
sissippi. We drove down to Tupelo
to watch the girls ride their horses
that afternoon and we can expect
two more juvenile riders of skill
in the ring this spring. Linda Hes
ter will be showing SUN’S JENNY
LYNN, a bay mare by MIDNIGHT
SHINING SUN out of a MERRY
GO BOY mare, that was purchased
from Dave Grissom of Athens.
Norma, the younger sister has
a roan SUN DUST mare by the
name of DELINA GIRL that she
can ride with ease. Father Hester
is hoping soon to show the stallion
CHANCE’S SUN DUST in amateur
classes but as of right now O’Cal
laghan will be showing this chest
nut horse in the 3 year old classes.
O’Callaghan has just started a
SUN DUST filly for the Hesters
that looks good and hopes will be
FEBRUARY, 1965
ready for 2 year old filly classes
this summer. Mrs. Hester is as en
thusiastic about the horses as Hugh
and the daughters, Linda and
Norma. They all plan to be at the
shows as soon as the gates open
in the spring. Watch for Linda and
SUN’S JENNY "LYNN and Norma
and DELINA GIRL in the Juve
nile Classes.
While I was visiting O’Callag-
han’s bam with the Hesters, I met
several other interesting people,
one of whom was Ted Magers,
from Calhoun City, Mississippi.
Ted and his daughter, Becky each
show a white mare by SILVER
SULTAN in the Amateur classes.
Becky has a 4 year old called SUL
TAN’S SILVER STAR and the
other is SULTAN’S GLORY GIRL,
a 3 year old. This father-daughter
team make many shows in Missis
sippi and Alabama and really have
a ball together. Look for them if
you attend shows in that area. You
will probably see a black 2 year old
this year that they own by GO
BOY’S SPECIAL.
