HARBER & CHERRY STABLES
In a recent letter from trainer Bob Cherry of Centerville , Tennessee , we learned that a new stables is in the making and that they now have a barn full of good stock in the old stable . Bob , who took over the reins of Mr . Ed Vaughn ’ s operation in Dallas . Texas , for awhile last year , informs us that he is still working with Mr . Vaughn and that his show horses have returned to Tennessee with him . Regarding show horses , about all that Mr . Cherry would tell us was that we have an open invitation to visit the Harber & Cherry Stables and see what fine stock they do have . If last year is any indication as to what this young trainer can do , we know that HILLS MERRY GO BOY , a top two year old in 1964 ( and MIGHTY GO BOY , owned by Mr . Vaughn , the black aged stallion that pushed some top horses around last year , should be ready for the coming season . We plan a trip to Centerville soon and will give you a firsthand report of the progress on the new stables as well as the horses now in training at Harber and Cherry Stables . WALLACE DUNN STABLES
Over in Petersburg , Tennessee , we have a report that business at the Wallace Dunn Stables has picked up to near full capacity and that a program of breeding , training and sales is in full swing . Wallace states that his policy is “ honesty and fairness to everyone ” and that it apparently pays off in the long run . They are selling and shipping horses to many parts of the country .
SHADOWS SUPERIOR is reported to be in great shape and ready for the 1965 show season as is CHEYENNE THUNDER , the terrific sorrel stallion owned by VOICE Contributing Editor Virginia Lamb of Sacramento , California . Wallace pointed out that he was very pleased that Mrs . Lamb , who is one of the most ardent supporters of the Tennessee Walking Horse on the West Coast , returned her show horse to Middle Tennessee where he can compete with the best of the breed . CHEYENNE THUNDER has been a consistent winner on the West Coast as well as a breeding horse of note . We are pleased that Wallace Dunn has this top horse and will be looking forward to following his show ring activities this year . BENDER FARMS
Up in Richmond , Kentucky , Mr . Bob McQuerry , trainer for Bender Farms of Mr . John Bright , is hard at work on some Tennessee Walking Horses . In a recent letter from Mr . Rodney Whitlock , we learned that the interest in the Tennessee Walking Horse is increasing in their area and that the Bender Farms should have some good stock under saddle for the 1965 season . Mr . Whitlock , who has been showing horses for some time , just broke into the Walking Horse business last year and states that the thrill of showing Walking Horses surpasses anything he has ever done . The Bender Farms has an experienced man in Bob McQuerry , who trained MARY ’ S WHITE LADY , winner of the Kentucky Junior Mare Championship in 1962 , and they are looking forward to a good year this season . HACKETT STABLES
From Carthage , Tennessee , we received word from Mr . Jimmy Hackett , that he has decided to reopen the training stable previously operated by his late father , Gid Hackett . Those of you who knew and admired the late Mr . Hackett know the reputation for training and care of fine show horses that he established . In the background of Hackett Stables are such names as MIGHTY LITTLE MAN and SETTING SUN , just to mention two of the many greats . Jimmy points out that they have their facilities in good shape and are now taking horses for training . We are glad that the name of Hackett Stables will soon be back in the horse show roster .
WALLER BROTHERS STABLES
From Southern Alabama comes word of another new Walking Horse Stable being set up in that part of the country . The Waller Brothers Stables , with Ronald Sutton as manager and trainer , is now open and the operation will include training for outside horses . They have a new barn , complete with wash room , automatic cooler walker , a nice club house for customers and horse lovers in general and have available about a square mile of beautiful country for riding purposes . This is reported to be one of the nicest facilities in this part of the country and should be a real asset to the Walking Horse business .
DUDE CROWDER STABLES
One of the nicest fellows we know in the Walking Horse business is young Mr . Dude Crowder of Bethel , North Carolina . We have been after Dude for some time to let us know just what is going on in his part of the country and we were pleased to get the following letter . We are reprinting it in its entirety to point out that even a trainer can talk about his stock without really “ bragging .” This is what we like about “ Dude .”
“ Dear Bruce :
I finally have time to sit down and write you to let you know what ’ s going on down this way . I took over Fairlane Acres in October and everything is going well . I ’ m working twenty-five head of horses and have some good young stock this year . F . L . Blount , Jr ., of Bethel has a good coming three year old filly by SHADOW who will give the other three year old fillies some tough competition in the coming year . She looks and works like a champion and has the power and heart to go all the way . You ’ ll soon be hearing a lot about ( Continued on Page 14 )
