WALKERS IN TEXAS
In an idle moment the other night my husband and I began counting the horse shows we attended this year and we were somewhat astonished to count twenty-seven shows since March. And we took at least one horse to twenty-four of these shows. No wonder we ' re ready for a rest!
Mr. and Mrs. RICHARD K. WALKER, formerly of Mori da and now of Dallas, are newcomers to the Walking Horse scene in Texas. I had a very nice letter from Mrs. Walker and am looking forward to meeting her and seeing her black stallion, Jubilee Allen, very soon, for I’ m told by JOHN DENSON that he is something to see.
Mr. C. N. HARDIN, of El Paso, has written me about shows in that area and he tells me that we have a large number of Walkers in far West Texas. 1 would be happy to hear from-more of you West Texans about your horses. Mr. JIMMY HOOTEN of Sugarland had written me about his fine colt, so we were especially happy to see how well it did at the Celebration, even though we didn’ t get to meet Mr. Hooten.
October 16 was a really big day here in East Texas. It was the day of Tyler’ s famous Rose Festival Parade and my husband and I rode our Tennessee Walkers in it. We had a grand time until our high school honor guard shot off a cannon right behind us. I’ ll probably never be the same. Then, that night, our East Texas Horse Show-and Rodeo Association had its championship show ' in Jacksonville and presented awards to all those who qualified. Our good friend John Denson was the high point winner in the Tennessee Walking Horse Class, and we couldn ' t be prouder. The perfect finishing touch, to us, was when my husband and 1 were presented a special award, a beautiful clock trophy, from the gaited horse and Tennessee Walking Horse people for our efforts on behalf of these classes. We treasure this trophy above any we’ ve ever received.

An enthusiastic group of Walking Horse and gaited horse people from several East Texas communities met in October and formed The East Texas Show Horse Association. The purpose of this association is to hold shows, informative discussions, field trips, movies, and to generally enjoy our hobby of horses. We were impressed by the spirit of cooperation and determination of this group. Officers elected were: President, A. J.( JIMMY) LOCKE of Tyler; Vice President, Dr. ROGER HARMON of Marshall; Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs. TOM PUCKETT of Tyler; and Reporter, Miss BETTY KITTRELL of Tyler. Dr. Harmon set the mood for the meeting by reminding us that showing our horses is a hobby to be pursued with good feeling and sportsmanship, and he urged us not to lose sight of this idea.
To demonstrate what a lively group this is, at that same meeting plans were made to hold our first show and it was held on November 6 in Tyler. In spite of an entire week of rain beforehand, and thanks to a wonderful grounds crew, we had a very good show. Mr. and Mrs. ELI POOLE of Nacogdoches acted as judges and Mr. JASON SUMMERS furnished his usual wonderful organ music. First place winners in the Walking Horse classes were: Juvenile Walking Horse— Glory’ s Day, owned by TOM CLAY and ridden by CINDY Clay of Tyler; Two-Year-Old Walking Horse— Sun’ s Merry Rhythm, owned and ridden by C. C. WILLIAMS of Harleton; Ladies Walking Horse— Merry’ s Hells Bells, owned and ridden by Mrs. TOM PUCKETT of Tyler; Amateur Walking Horse— Merry Tom, owned by C. C. Williams and ridden by Dr. ROGER HARMON of Marshall; Open Walking Horse— Merry ' s Hells Bells, ridden by John Denson of Tyler. Complete results will be found in Show Results.
Our association has had, in its short existence, a hamburger supper and the movie " Free and Easy,” and we plan to visit, as a group, Cypress Acres Stables, owned by C. C. Williams, in a few days. Our plans include several dinner meetings and visits to nearby stables this winter, as well as at least five shows next summer in five different East Texas locations. But this winter when it is too cold to do much except feed the horses and talk about them, we’ ll certainly talk!
One of the last shows of the season that we were able to attend was the Seventh Annual Garland, Texas, show, a success again, thanks to Dr. BYRON LAN- DRESS. At the Garland show, Mr. ELGIN GANDY of Fort Worth specifically asked that I mention other horses besides mine, but honestly, Mr. Gandy, I wasn’ t able to get the results, so you won’ t mind my saying that my Merry’ s Hells Bells, ridden by John Denson of Tyler, won the Open Class, if I add that your Sun’ s Rhythm Rambler took second, will you? I mean, that’ s MY horse!
