YOUR ROVING REPORTER By Charles Goldswig
All Tennessee Walking Horse Celebrations are good, but I missed the last one which was the best. Itwould have been the best one for me because I once tried to buy the winning horse, Triple Threat.
A few years back I was having a cup of coffee at the Jackson Motel in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with Mr. CULLUM FERRILL, well-known horse and mule trader in that area, and we were joined by FRANK BAR BER, the genial gentleman, contractor and horseman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Cullum and I were high on SAM PASCHAL’ s chance of winning the World’ s Championship with Setting Sun. Mr. Barber agreed that Sam was a great showman and also thought that Setting Sun was a top horse. " However,” said Frank, " after the Celebration, one of the greatest horse shows in America is the Dixie Jubilee,”( held in the Coliseum at Baton Rouge) and following the Celebration invited us to come down. Cullum was unable to get away but I flew down.
While in Baton Rouge I saw a familiar face working a pretty goodlooking stallion. When he stopped to give his horse a little rest, I asked if the horse were for sale. Well, he was not just sure, and asked me to check back with him in a day or two. It so happened that my good friend Sam Paschal was there, having won the World’ s Championship with Setting Sun. He was invited to bring his champion to put on an exhibition just prior to the Alabama- " Ole Miss” football game. I asked Sam, who said the horse had some potential and if I could buy him for $ 3,00 to $ 4,00 I’ d have no trouble making a fast $ 500 if I did not want to keep him. Having had no experience in dealing or in owning top horses, I put the question right up to Triple Threat’ s owner, " Coach” TINSLEY. I knew him as a football coach for LSU and later as a professional player with the Chicago Cardinals and, to his credit, he was very honest in telling me that it had cost about $ 2,500 to get Triple Threat where he was at that time. How much he was worth or how much he would be worth was a matter of conjecture, so in a Weak moment, and with a very nervous hand, I wrote a check for $ 5,000 and handed it up to Tinsley as he sat in the saddle. He smiled and said, " I think I will turn you down. I might be sorry, but since I ' made’ this horse, I think I will hang on for a while.” The rest is history, for Triple Threat was judged to be the best and is the World’ s Champion Walking Horse. Of course, it does not follow that even if I had bought the horse he would have developed as he has, but it is interesting and rewarding to feel that I had a little part in the history of this great champion. You can bet that the next time they show Triple Threat I will be there. This is the last column I will be writing from this part of the country. It is time for my annual trek to St. Petersburg Beach where I will be from November 1 through May 1. I can be contacted by mail or phone at the Gulf Winds Apartments, as usual. Again I offer to supply any information about the coming horse shows in Florida or about Walking Horses in particular.

JIMMY HOLLOWAY WALKING HORSE SALE SCHEDULED FOR MARCH
The annual JIMMY HOLLOWAY Walking Horse Sale is scheduled for March 25 and 26, 1966. Getting an early start on his plans, Jimmy says that all indications are that this will be the best one yet. The " Deep South” is beginning to open wide for all types of Walking Horse interest and there has long been a need for a sale of this type in Mississippi. Jimmy started this sale in 1963 and has seen it grow to good proportions since then. With the backing of almost all the Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiasts of that area and the local Chamberof Commerce, Jimmy has made this the outstanding sale for Walking Horses in his area.
Making it a family affair, Bernice and Jimmy Holloway have worked hard to make the sale a success,, and every year a " sale party” is held after the first night. This too has been successful and will again be part of the schedule.
There are stalls for over two hundred horses and hopes are that all will be filled. Make your plans now to attend the 1966 Jimmy Holloway Walking Horse Sale, March 25 and 26, at the Fairgrounds in Kosciusco, Mississippi.
