TARHEEL REVIEW by Elaine and Harold Thacker Rt. 5, Winston-Salem, N. C. In February ELAINE and I visited the most modern barn in North Carolina. Sally Hills Farm is located off Highway 301 in Fayetteville, N. C. The farm con sists of 90 acres. Mr. and Mrs. DENNIS WILLIAMS own this beautiful farm. The name, Sally Hill, came from the original Sally Hill Farm in Florence, S. C. On this farm they have Black Angus Show Cattle. It is owned by Dr. and Mrs. CLAUDE LEE SEXTON, Mrs. Williams’ parents. The twenty-one stall bam is white and has green shutters. The porch has four large white columns. On each side of the porch, there is red and green shrubbery which stretches the length of the barn. The shrub bery is protected by a low wall painted white. From the road, the barn looks like a large motel. You enter the barn through the lounge. It is decorated in eight eenth century English Tavern. There is a window between the lounge and the working area so you can watch the horses work without getting out of your easy chair. This is a very nice place to relax any afternoon. The entire barn is heated and air condition ed. There is an office and a bath adjoining the lounge. They mov ed into the bat;n in June, 1964. Mr. KENNETH BURK is the trainer at Sally Hills Farms. He has been with the barn for six months. Miss CANDACE WILLIAMS is the proud exhibitor from this barn. Mrs. Williams also shows occasionally. 12 Their top two-year-old is Eldo rado Mike. He is a chestnut stal lion by Sun’s Eldorado out of a Midnight Mike mare. A black colt named Chevy n is another two-year-old that Mr. Burk has started. This colt was sired by Mr. Chevrolet. Both Eldorado Mike and Chevy II show a lot of promise and will surely be among North Caro lina’s top two-year-olds. In 1962, Mr. Burk won twenty- seven championship stakes on a black stallion named Mr. Chev rolet. Mr. Chevrolet was sold to Mr. C. E. CLEMENT ofHickory, North Carolina. SAM CECIL, JR. trained Mr. Chevrolet at Clement Stables, and rode him to the North Carolina State Cham pionship Stake in 1963. Then Mr. Chevrolet was sold to Doctor CLAUDE L. SEXTON, Florence, S. C., and Mr. DENNIS WILL IAMS, Fayetteville, N. C. During the 1964 Season Miss Candace Williams rode "Chevrolet” in Ju venile and amateur classes. Can dace and "Chevrolet” were in the winners circle many times. Now that Mr. Burk is training this fine stallion again, there is much hope for more Blues in the 1965 Show Season. Go Boy’s Gladiator is a three- year-old stallion that Mr. Burk has very high hopes for. "Gladi ator” is black in color and car ries his head high and proud. Merry Go Boy is the sire of this promising three-year-old. Eternal Sun is a black stallion with a lot of head motion, a great back end, and a wonderful front end. This may seem like a lot to say about one horse, but this one has proven himself over and over again. In 1961, Eternal Sun was the Reserve World Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion. In 1964, he won the Virginia Horse Show Association point standings; al so in 1964 this stallion won the North Carolina Walking Horse Celebration Championship Stake with Mr. Burk up. Eternal Sun with Mr. Burk up will be a top contender for all top honors in South Carolina, North Caro lina, Virginia and throughout the rest of the Walking Horse World. The following horses will also represent Sally Hills Farms dur ing the 1965 Show Season: Go Boy’s Ebony Angel, an aged mare; Go Boy’s Moon Maid, another aged mare; Go Boy’s Mr. Somebody, an aged stallion; and Sally Hill’s Candy, a sorrel two-year-old filly. Good Luck, Candace, in the coming Show Season. The competition was tough in 1964, but now that Mr. Kenneth Burk has come on the scene, it will be even tougher. Good Luck, Kenny. THANK YOU, Mr. and Mrs. Williams, for making our visit to Sally Hills Farm a most enjoy able and fascinating one.
