firmation or performance, but
STROLLING JIM behaves like a
gentleman and he is truly a beauti
ful walking horse.” Then said the
queens, “Long live the King!”
Floyd Carruthers said, “I’d ra
ther have this ribbon than any
I’ve ever won, and it went to a great
horse.” Colonel Bacon, owner of
the grand champion, said, “I’m
proud of this achievement. Stroll
ing Jim is the greatest horse of
the age.” Mrs. Bacon added, “Yes,
it’s truly wonderful, for this horse
is the pride of my husband’s life.”
Governor Cooper, erstwhile ring
master said nothing but smiled
broadly — probably at the success
of his home town’s first gigantic
celebration which Dr. Willis B.
Boyd, director general of the event,
had announced a few minutes ear
lier as being a complete success
“financially and in every way” as
he added that a great contribution
had been made to the walking
horse industry throughout Amer
ica, particularly Middle Tennessee
which is now considered “The
Walking Horse Capital of the
World.”
Mr. W. Shakespeare’s character,
one Richard, was not in Shelbyville
when he cried “A horse, a horse,
my kingdom for a horse;” and it
was safe to say that as the curtain
fell upon the Tennessee Walking
Horse National Celebration and
the well-pleased crowd began to
wend their way homeward to many
parts of the country, the three
persons who were happiest as they
departed were Floyd Carruthers
of Wartrace, Col. H. C. Bacon of
Louden, and STROLLING JIM of
the U. S. A.
