He became actively interested in Walking Horses around 1951 and won the pony class at the Cele bration in 1955-56. He departed from the horse business in 1957 and worked in the printing busi ness with his mother in Nashville for a couple of years, but in 1959 he started back with a public sta ble at Melrose Farms in Nashville. He has been in Mississippi since 1962. Last year at the Celebration, Linda Robinson won the Juvenile Class on GO BOY’S CHALLEN GER under Dickie’s capable train ing. He purchased GO BOY’S CRY STAL as a yearling and sold him to Beech. Yokley and Hale, as a two year old. Two years ago he sold Mrs. Paul Randolph the well known mare MAY MADNESS, that she now shows. This year Dickie won the two year old class at Co lumbia, Tennessee with GO BOY’S DESTINY. He is similiar to Rus sell in the fact that he likes to start his stock young and does very well with them. Each of them have a palomino colt by MERRY GO BOY to show in the two year old classes next year for Circle R Stables and GLL Farms. Dickie showed a Junior horse at the Celebration that he tied 4th with in the Junior Stake. There is an interesting story behind this stallion . . . Hawkshaw Hawkins, the famed Country Music star, bought the horse on February 7, 1963, and Dickie picked him up that day to take to Mississippi as a yearling. Hawkshaw saw his horse only one time. Three weeks later, he was fatally injured in a plane crash that many people will remember. Hawkshaw had always wanted to own a black stallion that would be good enough to show in the Celebration. The horse and Dickie did well this year for Mrs. Hawkins. The horses name . . . HAWK’S MEMORY. It was indeed a pleasure to talk with Russell and Dickie Pate in that fine office at the double sta ble on the Celebration grounds. We wish every success in the future to these two brothers, the Circle R. Stables and the George Lee Le nox Farms. 6 1950 _ RUSSELL PATE riding LUCKY BUD, one of the many fine Walking Ponies which has been made by this young trainer over the years. 1964 — DICKIE PATE riding HAWK’S MEMORY to the Blue in the Little Rock, Arkansas Horse Show. £2—.
