Just received a nice letter from Mitzi Williams en route home from the Celebration. Lew and Mitzi sold two brood mares from Mitzi- Lew R anch in Tennessee, both by MIDNIGHT SUN and both safely in foal to GO BOYS SUN. One went to Bob Guinn. The other went to Hank Sheely of Dallas. MID NIGHT JANE, the mare Mr. Guinn bought, is a full sister to his MID NIGHT MOON, a mare who won the mare and colt class at the Cele bration several years back. Mitzi remarked she hated to part with them, but they are still “cutting down” at Mitzi-Lew Ranch and too, “it sure doesn’t hurt SUN to have his colts spread around the country.” She describes a fabulous time back at the Celebration. Practically has me packing my bags a year ahead of time, ‘cause it’s “dead or alive, the Celebration in ’65” for the Wiehls! The descriptions of friendly people, fine horses, warm OCTOBER, 1964 hospitality, and to cap it all a few details such as “barbecued spare ribs,” which really “got” me “right here” makes one want to rush through the calendar to next years Celebration time. As a result of her fourth trip back to the Celebration, traveling both ways with trainer, Chester Gillespie, it seems Fou Fou, Mitzi’s darling black miniature poodle, now has acquired a pronouced Southern accent. (Chester was bom and raised in Walking Horse coun try. While he has left the country, some of Tennessee is still with him.) Besides the poodle, Chester is travelling with another cele brity. TOWN AND COUNTRY, the gelding who was third in the gelding stake, and second in the amateur gelding stake at this years Celebration, on successive nights, is traveling Westward to Mitzi- Lew Ranch with Mr. Gillespie. (Picture of “Town and Country” in August VOICE, page 10) Mitzi describes him as “sure pretty,” “tough,” “lean,” and “fine as a deer.” She was referring to the gelding, TOWN AND COUNTRY. One thing sure, we on the Coast have something to look forward to in the shows coming up, namely, Mitzi up on TOWN AND COUN TRY. Welcome to the West, boy, and good luck!
