best show stock and never shows one until they are ready for the top places . Bud has attended almost every show in our 3-state area this season and he made a long trip to Detroit , Michigan to show the horse of a man who lives there . Mobile , Alabama , Jackson , Mississippi and Montgomery were next on his schedule with 4 to 5 outstanding horses entered at each .
A new training bam has been opened in Athens , Alabama about 10 miles east on Old Highway 31 . Mr . D . L . Putman and Bobby Young , trainer , have a partnership operation for training about 25 horses . Bobby will be working many for Mr . Putman but will also be taking outside horses to work . He has a fine barn with wide halls for indoor riding with an additional barn for stabling more horses . Bobby has approximately 20 head in the barn now with room for others . He was just moving to the new home by the barn the day that I was there so I didn ’ t have the opportunity to see his horses but you will hear more about them later .
At the J . V . Clayton Stable in Attalla , Alabama is a 6 year old chestnut stallion by the name of RISING SUN . Nina Frazier has been showing this horse and winning her share of ribbons . Her wins on RISING SUN include the amateur class at the Greater Birmingham Show . Open Amateur at Lineville and Open Amateur at Gadsden . RISING SUN will be standing at the Clayton Stable for the 1965 breeding season .
Buddy Bradford who lives in Russellville * has several good mares and colts in a breeding program he began in 1960 at the Murray Sale . There he purchased the dam of BOMB ’ S BALLYHOO , Amateur World ’ s Champion this year . He sold the full sister to BALLYHOO to D ’ Leese Williamson and the mare is now a 4 year old and is in Bud Dunn ’ s barn . D ’ Leese has offered her for sale since college will take most of her time now . Buddy has a 2 year old MACK K filly out of the same mare as these 2 show horses that is also in training with Bud . There is a yearling filly by
SUN DUST and a weanling by SUN DUST PERFECTION at Buddy ’ s farm also out of the same mare . This mare is THOMAS RED SQUIRREL by WILSON ’ S RAM BLER out of a FRANK WILSON ’ S ALLEN mare . She is bred this time to MIDNIGHT SUN . Buddy has a mare by ROMEO ALLEN by LAST CHANCE that has a SUN DUST yearling filly and a weanling PIDDLEY colt . Another good bred mare by MERRY MAKER , out of a LAST CHANCE mare has a 2 year old MACK K stallion in training and a yearling PIDDLEY colt . Buddy plans to sell some of the horses though he said he hasn ’ t sold anything but the one sold to D ’ Leese since he started in the business . They just keep multiplying .
I went to Huntsville on a beautiful Saturday morning to the James K . Taylor barn to check on the new trainer . Buddy Kirby , who has recently moved there as trainer for Taylor was working a good looking MOONGLOW , 3- year-old by the show name of MOON TRAVELER . He should make a grand stake horse for Buddy next year . TRAVELER has only been worked as much as a 2 year old and will make his show entrance at Montgomery . Buddy worked several others for me including a good headshaking blue roan 3 year old by the name of MOONGLOW ’ S KNIGHT . He is by MIDNIGHT MOONGLOW out of a GO BOY mare . His show career has to date been rather limited but all at the barn say that he has made remarkable improvement since Buddy has been riding him and they will probably take him to Montgomery .
The other horses in the barn include a 7 year old PRIDE OF PANOLA gelding , several coming 2 year olds , and coming 3 year olds by WISER ’ S GO BOY , MERRY GO BOY and MIDNIGHT IKE . Buddy will be working exclusively for James K . Taylor and their operation will be training and selling show horses besides keeping a show string for their own benefit . They are planning another big barn and should need it with the added interest of James K in road horses and parade horses . A very versatile horseman is Mr . Taylor and you will probably see these new entries of the Taylor barn at Montgomery , too .
I am planning to make the trip to see the Montgomery Horse Show and will come back with more news and results of the classes for you .

NEAL BRANSCUM STABLES
An important move has recently been made by trainer Neal “ Shorty ” Branscum formerly from Winchester , Tennessee . Neal had worked with the Beckler-Brown Stables in Shelbyville for a year when opportunity presented itself in the form of Mr . Charlie Corley of Tulsa , Oklahoma . “ Shorty ,” who is perhaps most well known for his early training of such horses as World Champion SUN ’ S DE LIGHT and JOHNNY MIDNIGHT , has taken over a new stable operation for Mr . Corley . They are in the process of buying some good young stock and going to work on some of Mr . Corley ’ s amateur stock which his daughter Diana shows . We will surely be hearing more from this new Walking Horse operation “ out west .”
JUDY GROSS STABLES
We reported briefly last month on the misfortune of the Judy Gross Stables in Tucson , Arizona at losing their highly touted stallion SHADOWS LUMINAIRE . Trainer Glenn Willis called the VOICE and informed us of the incident in which the great horse accidently got out of his stall and broke one of his back legs . The injury was severe and LUMI NAIRE had to be put to sleep . LUMINAIRE will be hard to replace as a breeding sire and at last report this group had looked at SHADOW ’ S TROUPER in addition to several other top horses . TROUPER , a five year old black stud , is owned by Dr . and Mrs . Jones of Manchester , Michigan . They have also owned and worked such top horses as WALK-AWAY ( Continued on Page 28 )
