BARN STORMING( Contd.) THIS AND THAT
We had an interesting discussion with Mr. A. I. Bauman of Balboa in the Canal Zone, Panama, while making the tour of stables at the Montgomery Horse Show. Mr. Bauman, who is originally from Denver, Colorado and has been employed by the U. S. Government for 24 years, expressed a new-found interest in the Tennessee Walking Horse and is tryto create more interest in the breed in the Canal Zone. He purchased his first horse from a friend in Panama and now has a registered Walking Horse named LITTLE BOY CHANCE, a four year old sorrel stud with LAST CHANCE breeding, which he purchased in July. He has attended the Baton Rouge and the Montgomery Horse Shows this year and is very enthusiastic about the prospects of the Tennessee Walking Horse in Panama. At the present, Mr. Bauman has his horses stabled at Fort Clayton Riding Stables, a private club on the base which has over 34 horses. There are seven organized riding clubs in the Canal Zone and with a little help the Walking Horse could become very popular. We appreciate the personal efforts of people such as Mr. Bauman, who are working so hard to assist us in creating world-wide interest in the Tennessee Walking Horse.
PAUL SMITH STABLES
Winter Garden, Florida is a long way from Montgomery, Alabama, and while Paul Smith was busy getting ready for the return trip, we had time to talk with him regarding his Walking Horse stable. Paul, who worked for Mr. Frank Roper for several years before going in business for himself, has a thirty stall barn with all the modern conveniences for training show horses. At present he has 26 in training including DETERMINA TION, a six year old black stallion that Mr. Roper has shown successfully this year. MACK K’ S RED BUD, a three year old gelding owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Bell of Pompano Beach, has been showing great promise and of course SHADOW ' S NODDER, an outstanding two year old sorrel stud colt has had a most successful season for owner Mr. Frank Roper. Paul has iust purchased a top four year old mare from Charlie Bobo for Mr. Roper and believes that she has the makings of a top mare.
Heading the list of“ things to do for 1965” at the Paul Smith Stables is the breaking and working of ten good coming two year old colts. Paul says that he has good blood stock with SHADOW, GO BOY, PIDDLEY and MIDNIGHT SUN predominant. He also has a coming three year old stud colt owned by Mr. Lowery of Melbourne, Florida that will require some concentrated work this winter. One of the top prospects of his coming two crop is a half sister to SHADOW’ S NODDER. She is by GO BOY out of a SOCIETY MAN mare and is owned by Mr. Roper.
They are standing MIDNIGHT SATIN, a black stallion owned by Frank Roper, who showed him as an amateur horse to win many top ribbons. His first crop of colts are now on the ground and show excellent prospects. MIDNIGHT SA TIN is a full brother to MIDNIGHT LADY ANN and MR. NAMRON, both well known horses. They are breeding to many well bred mares in the greater Florida area and now have twenty five mares in foal by him.
Heading the list of amateur horses to be shown under the Paul Smith banner next year will be SUN DUST LITTLE MAN, a four year old gelding that should join Mr. Roper’ s DETERMINATION as one of the leading amateur horses of the up-and-coming Florida Sunshine Circuit. L. L. MAJURE STABLES
Young Jimmy Lee, trainer for the L. L. Majure Stables of Meridian, Mississippi, is making a good reputation for himself as he finishes up a successful season. Jimmy, who has been working such top amateur stock as BLACK BOMBER B, the terrific black stud shown by Mrs. Nelda Majure Goodling this year, and MIS SISSIPPI GAMBLER, a roan gelding exhibited by young Miss Hallie Goodling, has his work cut out for him this winter as he settles down to work the Majure horses. He now has nine in training and is looking forward to coming out next year with even better horses than they had this year.
Jimmy has been showing SE CRET’ S PROMISE, a black three year old mare who has won six blues this season. His two year old filly also had a good year as did a chestnut MAJOR WILSON
stud colt. He has two coming two horses to start including the last colt sired by SPUR’ S ROAN AL LEN. He also has a bay stud colt by BLACK BOMBER. We would like to add that the black and white colors of the L. L. Majure Stables are enhanced greatly by the two charming ladies who show under the training of Mr. Jimmy Lee. Mrs. Goodling always looks great in her gold coat and Hallie is strictly“ peaches and cream” in her pink coat and matching pink ribbon on her beautiful roan gelding. BOBO AND SONS STABLES
Along about now you can get some horse talk out of Charlie Bobo, but not until he has a chance to tell you about the sports activities of his young son Bill. Charlie and his lovely wife have a lot to be proud of in both Charlie, Jr. and Bill. The high school team for which Bill is a 192 pound halfback, is leading the state in their division and appears to be headed for a championship. Bill is also a champion wrestler as well as an outstanding football player. Charlie, Jr. is busy at David Lipscomb College studying pre-law but still has time to help at a horse show now and then.
Horsewise, Charlie Bobo is about as busy as any trainer in the business. He has judged several top shows this season, including Pin Oak, the Celebration and Baton Rouge, as well as making many horse shows. The Bobo fortyfour stall stable is full and his team of three good men keep two coolers working every day. Charlie says they have a horse with saddle ready every time he gets off one.
Among the many good horses he
