Want to travel with your horse ? If so , then of course you would like to know where you can stable him along the way . There is a second printing of the HORSEMANS MOTEL GUIDE by H . A . Phillips that lists 300 motels which will help the traveling horsemen find a place to bed and care for his animals . It also lists saddle shops , trailer manufacturers and guest ranches in more than 30 states .
Two motels are listed in Sacramento which offer total stabling vacancies of 10 corrals , 40 box stalls , loading chutes and arenas . There are also listings in Napa . Napa County ; Redding , Shasta County ; Stockton , San Joaquin County ; and Woodland , Yolo County .
Trailering tips are also offered . Horsemen traveling cross country can consult the pocket size manual to determine facilities both for themselves and their horses . This guide can be had by mailing 25c to P . O . Box 7387 , Station A , San Antonio , Texas . Bloodtyping Tells Horse ' s Parentage ( Reprinted from the Sacramento Bee ) A milestone in horse research was reached recently when a California geneticist proved that blood typing can be developed to solve a majority of parentage cases .
Tests developed by Dr . Clyde Stormont and Yoshido Suzuki of the University of California at Davis , Yolo County school of veterinary medicine will be used to establish foal parentage in cases of double breeding . They also may serve as a guide to warn breeders when hemolytic disease of newborn foals is possible .
The American Jockey Club has stamped its seal of approval on this work by permitting correction of present records to show the true sire in double breeding cases . Up to now both sires had to be listed on foal parentage records . Cases verified by the University serology laboratory make t h e change possible .
Exclude Others
Stormont and his colleagues makes it clear that they do not specify one horse as being the sire as much as they exclude other horses as possible sire candidates .
He explains , “ What we do is show that of a number of horses which may have had the opportunity to breed any mare , it would have been impossible for all but one to have been the sire .”
___ nave oe * used in blood typing cattle a r . sheep since the 1940 ’ s . Cattle blo < grouping first was done succes fully in the early 1940 ’ s at the Ur versity of Wisconsin genetics d partment . Practical applications this work came soon after .
Reagent Basis
Stormont revealed blood typii is done on the basis of reagent which give certain reactions various inherited characteristi found in the red blood cells animals . He said the key to su cess in this work is developme : of reliable reagents .
“ The more reagents we ha ' N available to use , the more close we can limit blood types and e : elude other possibilities ,” he sai While a great many reagents ha^ been developed for cattle and shee blood typing , there are only 1
used for horses . Stormont antic pates that as blood research pr < gresses other reagents will be d < veloped to make horse blood tyj ing comparable to cattle typing .
World Center
Work with the Purebred Cattl Breeders Association , various ai tificial insemination groups , th jockey club , the California Thoroughbred Breeders and the American Shetland Pony Club , as well as other groups and individuals , has given the UCD scientists a background of experience in their field and made the university a world training center in animal blood type work . In an effort to increase knowledge of animal blood typing , Stormont is to spend the next school year at the San Diego Zoo , where he will conduct blood type research on sheep , goats , buffalo , deer , camels and zebras . His goal is to learn more about the evolutionary relationship between these animals and the domesticated breeds .
Gallant Bess In The News Again
Many months ago , I had the rare opportunity to bring you the story of GALLANT BESS , the famed war horse of World War II and the horse whose gallantry became a legend to the men serving during that period . Her story became a movie . Now , BESS is in the news again . She was recently a patient at the University of California at Davis animal clinic .
Veterinarians made a preliminary diagnosis of the mare ’ s troubles and believe she is suffering from that familiar ailment , the toothache , although this appears to have given Bess the added problem of a sinus infection .
A chronic nasal discharge had caused her worried owner and wartime companion , Arthur L . Parker , of Lincoln , Placer County , to bring her in for treatment . Here ’ s hoping that Bess will be her old self before too long .
