World Champion Retired At Montgomery Show

In the midst of an exciting horse show season there is little in the way of news that can surprise the entire horse world. Daily we are confronted with tid-bits of news that a particular horse has been sold or that a certain trainer is moving to a new location or that a top horse has died or certain training equipment has been ruled illegal, but seldom does news break that makes everybody stop and sit down! Such was the case, however, when the news was made public that the 1964 World’ s Grand Champion Walking Horse, PER FECTION’ S CARBON COPY had been sold.
News travels fast throughout the Walking Horse grapevine, and those who thought they had a real scoop were confronted with the story even as they approached the first stable at the Montgomery Showgrounds! What had happened? Who contacted whom? How much did they pay? What does Joe say? All these questions were best answered by the now well-known financier from Memphis, Mr. George Lee Lenox.
A big thinker, to say the least, Mr. Lenox was most eager to inform Walking Horse lovers in particular and horse lovers in general of the complete story. It is true! GLL Farms of Collierville, Tennessee, has purchased the famous CARBON COPY for the unprecedented amount of One Hundred and Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars($ 125,000.00). Immediate plans call for the horse to remain at the
Joe Webb Stables until the December 6th grand opening of his new barn in Searcy, Arkansas. After that, the great horse will be moved to GLL FARMS in Collierville where his stud services will be offered.
Just before leaving Chattanooga for the Montgomery Southern Championship Horse Show we were informed of the sale and the plans to retire CARBON COPY on Saturday night before the Championship Stake Class. There has been much discussion about the horse since the Celebration and some people contended that Joe Webb, his life-long trainer, would stand the horse at his new stable and would continue to show him. There was also much discussion that he would show him in Montgomery. The news of the sale and the proposed retirement was welcomed by many who dreaded to enter the ring in competition with this“ walking demon” who goes like the wind.”
As a show horse, CARBON COPY has always been spectacular. He won the 1962 Two Year Old Championship and was Reserve Champion Three Year Old in 1963! His show ring activities were limited during the 1964 season, and many people had their doubts about the future of ROGERS PER FECTION protege? However, when the time came to prove his worth, he did it in such convincing fashion that a unanimous decision was rendered on the class and some thirty thousand Walking Horse fans virtually rocked the ground of Middle Tennessee with applause. Perhaps the most outstanding trait of PERFECTION’ S CARBON COPY’ S show ring prowess is a running walk that is beyond description. This horse has a display of strength and pure power in this gait that defies comparison, and it is this trait that will be sought after in his get.
At his retirement, CARBON COPY made a repeat show of it for the crowd of deep South horse lovers in the Montgomery Coliseum and made believers out of a lot of people. Joe Webb entered the gate on CARBON COPY to the
