TARHEEL REVIEW by Elaine and Harold Thacker Rt. 5, Winston-Salem, N. C. Hi folks, Here we are again sounding off about Walking Horses in the Tar heel State. The Twenty - Ninth Annual Sedgefield Charity Horseshow was held on April 30-May 3 in Sedge- field, N. C. There was an extra large number of exhibitors and spectators, even with the unfavor able weather conditions. The Walking Horse judge was Mr. J. W. Noblin from Florence, Mississippi. This was the best job of judging North Carolina has seen in the ’64 show season. Mr. Nob lin has been associated with Ten nessee Walking Horses all his life. Mr. Noblin exhibited and trained one of the greatest show horses ever seen by Mississippi or any other state. This fine horse was THE SOCIETY PLAYBOY. We hope to see Mr. Noblin in North Carolina again real soon. One of the most outstanding Juvenile Horses showing in the two Carolinas and Virginia today is SPUR’S SECRET, owned by Cle ment Stables, Hickory, N. C.. and ridden by fourteen-year-old Ron nie Clement. Ronnie and trainer, Sam Cecil, Jr., have done a great job with this fine bay roan. Sam Cecil, Jr. and TRIPLE THREAT made a fine combination winning the open Stallion and Gelding Class and the $500.00 Championship Stake. We hope to see more of these two in the fu ture. Sam also won the Two-Year-Old Class on a very fine colt, EBONY TREASURE. This young horse with a lot of motion and stride is heading for many top honors throughout the State. When you go to a show you don’t know what to expect from Mr. Cecil. 20 The Open Walking Mare Class was won by Mr. Kenny Price on an outstanding four-year-old black mare named LITTLE EGYPT. LITTLE EGYPT which has the breeding of a champion is truly a champion. Her sire was a great horse, SUN’S JET PARADE. Mr. W. H. Lenthicum of High Point owns this fine mare. In the blues in the Stallion and Gelding Amateur Stake was MY MIDNIGHT MIKE owned by F. Willis Fisher and J. S. Liverman and shown by F. Willis Fisher. MY MIDNIGHT MIKE is one of the top amateur mounts showing in North Carolina today. This horse has won many top honors in the past and will surely be on top in all shows in the future. Dr. B. E. Snider of Lexington, N. C. rode MIDNIGHT DARK MELODY to victory in the Ama teur Walking Mare Class. MELODY and her owner and ri der Dr. Snider are very well-known throughout the Carolinas as a great team in the show ring. The Amateur Classes are becom ing more and more popular every show season. This class is a class especially for riders who are not profes sionals and therefore, do not make their living from riding and train ing horses. They mainly ride for the love of the sport. The fact that these riders are not professionals does not alter the enthusiasm of the audiences. In the Tarheel state many Walk ing Horse Classes are devoted to amateurs. The saying “You have to start somewhere” is true even in the cases of the best and most exper ienced trainers. These people didn’t become expert showmen over night. Perhaps many of them got much of their experience in the ring from showing horses in these Amateur Classes. These classes give valuable experience to those sincerely interested in becoming a better rider. The next time you go to a horse- show and watch an Amateur Class, take special note of the riders. Who knows? There may be a future trainer among them. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS AT SEDGE- FIELD. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. SO LONG UNTIL NEXT MONTH. Elaine and Harold Thacker.
