He also helped break MID NIGHT MERRY, who won the three year old Junior Stake and the big Stake at the Celebration the same year. Willard broke and showed SOCIETY BELL by SO CIETY MAN and tied third at the Celebration as a two year old. When Willard left Steve’s, he trained horses for Dr. Burch in Shelbyville. After Dr. Buch sold out, Willard moved to Ohio, where there was a desperate need for Walking Horse trainers. He opened a public stable and worked many horses for Ohioans, who were ra pidly becoming more and more in terested in this breed of horses. Willard has been in Ohio almost twelve years and says that it is fantastic how interest in the Walk ing Horse has developed, in qua lity as well as quantity. Almost three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Mark Kroll of Cincinnati, Ohio, persuaded Willard to man age and train the Walking Horses owned by them. They were new comers to the breed, but under the supervision and direction of Wil MAY, 1961 lard (plus a tremendous enthu siasm and love of Walking Horses) they have acquired some fine show horses, dabbled in breeding enough to acquire some top young off spring, build a spanking new sta ble with twenty - four stalls, straightaway, cooler, ventilating system, and a regulation training ring outside. The now familiar Calico Farms is located in the heart of Indian Hill in Cincinnati's horse country. Willard brought Calico’s GO BOY’S MAY GIRL to the limelight last year as Tri-State Champion Mare. For the first time he is bringing out a truly top gelding which he has kept under wraps and de voted many, many long hours of careful training and handling in order to produce a horse ready for the best of aged competition. W r for MACK K’S MR. CALICO. Wil lard has also brought finish and polish to WALKING MATILDA, Mrs. Kroll’s jet black ladies mare. Willard’s theory or secret to success is simply time and patience. He feels that the Tennessee Walk ing horse is a fine breed, and get ting finer all the time. He says that these are the greatest show horses we have today and that the true quality of the breed can be brought about in a natural way if given the proper time and unend ing patience. Willard lives in Loveland, Ohio with his wife. Wanda, and his thirteen year old daughter, Sharman. We are pleased to make Willard Tenpenny our Professional on Pa rade for the month of May and the invitation to visit Calico Farms in Cincinnati, Ohio stands open to all Walking Horse enthusiasts.
