the most talked about horses in the stable. This horse is owned by Mr. J. C. Haines and daughters, Judy and Jenny, of Columbus. Two top amateur horses. GO BOY’ S MASTERPIECE and GO BOY’ S MAJORETTE are also in training. Mrs. Barrington has her amateur mount, GO BOY ' S BLACK JACK B in training and is reported to be getting along well. A 2 year old sorrel owned bv Mrs. Marvin Kidd named LUCKY GO BOY will be shown by Jimmy Alexander this year. The Kidds live in Blakley, Georgia.
John Mayher has his SECRET MISSION in training and should prove to be one of the major amateur threats in this area. Also GO BOY ' S JULIA, a Junior Mare owned by Jack Tatum of Opelika, Florida will be shown some time later in the season. Our congratulations to the Barringtons and Mr. Hoyle Alexander for opening this new stable. We wish them much success.
Sharon Terry Stables
The Sharon Terry Stables have good news to report as usual. They have a new black gelding in training with Albert Lee Rowland in Boaz. Ala., that has been shown with much success this year. SUN ' S DARK DEMON won the Guntersville. Alabama show and tied blue in the gelding class at Scottsboro. Alabama. The Terry’ s have a blue roan two year old in training with Albert Lee that seems to be a good show prospect. They recently bought a MERRY BOY mare from Joe Webb and Sharon will again be showing her SHADOW’ S REP LICA this year. Incidentally, Sharon graduates from high school this year and recently won a scholarship for an essay she wrote. She plans to attend Mississippi State to take a pre-veterinarian course. Mr. and Mrs. Will C. Terry and Sharon are well known in the Walking Horse world and fans have seen Sharon ride for many years. It is indeed a compliment to the business that Sharon’ s love for horses has prompted her into the study of veterinarian medicine.
TAP ROOT FARM STABLES A first hand report of the activities of the Tap Root Farm Stables of Kingsport, Tennessee, was obtained from Mr. and Mrs. M. Lacy West, owner, at the Chattanooga Horse Show. Lacy and Julia were accompanied by Brenda Kirby, wife of Buddy Kirby, trainer, who was the judge of the show. Key-note of our most interesting conversation with these fine Walking Horse enthusiasts was, of course, MACK K’ S BIG STORY, one of the leading contenders for top honors in 1964.“ BIG STORY” has become one of the most talked about horses in the business and is frequently termed a“ sleeping giant.” Buddy says that he is working better than ever and is getting stronger by the day.
Buddy has 23 horses in training at the present time including a mystery horse that has been unknown until this season: THE RAVEN, who many say is comparable to the renowned SHADOW, will be shown by Julia West this season. GO BOY’ S APRIL LOVE, who was shown as a 2 year old by Ralph Hensley will be shown by Buddy’ s wife, Brenda. There’ s another‘ big story’ in the background at Tap Root Stables. He’ s MACK K’ S SUNDAY PUNCH, a full brother to an exact replica of the famed BIG STORY. Some of the other horses in the making with Buddy are: Roy Napier’ s MAJOR WIL SON stallion, THE IRON COLO NEL. a 3 year old gelding owned by T. R. Bandy. Jr.: MAJORETTE, a fine black MAJOR WILSON mare, owned by Arthur Minniard and a chestnut stallion with a flax mane and tail named MACK K’ S SHAMROCK will be shown by Mr. West this season. Again coming to the fore this year is the showy black amateur horse SHADOW’ S ECHO which Terry King of Kingsport rode to victory in the Knoxville Juvenile class last fall.
FLASH—
Trainer Glenn Willis recently moved from Jay, Florida to Tucson. Arizona. He and his new employers made a trip through Middle Tennessee and purchased some good stock. Among these was included the well-known SHADOW ' S LUMINAIRE. More news about Mr. Willis and LUMINAIRE in future issues.
CIRCLE " C " RANCH STABLES
Word has come to us from Bob Burnett that the new Circle“ C” Ranch Stables of Greer, South Carolina will be ready for full time training operations by June of this year. This newly organized Tennessee Walking Horse stable, of which Mr. Burnett is manager, is owned by Mr. Larry L. Cooper of Greer. Their trainer is Mr. Ralph Reese. Starting off with the benifit of a much enthused list of followers, the Circle“ C” Stables will open it’ s doors with a full house. Twenty stalls have been prepared and at the present they are filled up.
Following the example of many others in the Walking Horse business, these avid fans of the breed plan to operate their stable for the benefit of amateurs only. Their aim is to provide accommodations and facilities for show horses for amateurs who do not have the time or facilities to maintain and train a show horse for amateur competition. They do not plan to compete with the professionals.
The stable is located five miles off Highway 101 north of Greer, South Carolina and they open the doors wide to visitors and other interested parties. Mr. Burnett points out that they plan to start a breeding program soon and started off with the announcement that G. BLACK SHADOW would be standing at stud at the stable( sec Stallion Directory). They plan to have another top bred stallion shortly.
Our congratulations to Mr. Larry Cooper, Mr. Bob Burnett and Mr. Ralph Reese for their personal efforts on behalf of the Tennessee Walking Horse. We know their new Circle“ C” Stables will be a great success.
