This month we are pleased to PROFILE Mr. Vernon“ Red” Gochneaur, of Aurora, Ohio, who is well known both as an amateur exhibitor of good horses and as an avid promoter of the Tennessee Walking Horse throughout his native Ohio. He began his association with the breed in 1946 when he bought several pleasure mounts. Now all the family is devoted to the sport of showing their fine quality Tennessee Walking Horses. Mr. Gochneaur( pronounced Goshner), his wife, Alice, and their four children— Roger, Sandra, Candy, and Gregg— together with Roger’ s wife, Patt, and their son“ Rusty,” all share a common interest in the
Tennessee Walking Horse. This will be the first year of showring competition for Gregg( age 9), but he shows signs of following in his father’ s footsteps.
Mr. Gochneaur is the founder of Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics, of which he is the President. He has national cosmetic studios from the East Coast to the West Coast. Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics also operates in Canada and is registered in five other countries. He extends an invitation to each of his friends to come into their nearest Fashion Two Twenty Studio and say“ I love Walking Horses” which is the key prhase to a free Fashion Two Twenty Make-up.
The Gochneaurs have the Town and Country Stables, one of the most beautiful stables in Northeastern Ohio. The picture of their stable has been featured in several publications of manufacturers’ magazines. The barn is 50 x 200 feet, with 23 beautiful maple stalls, and a walnut and glass paneled tack room, from which you can view the horses.
In 1947, Mr. Gochneaur, pur. chased his first show horse frorrJ Mr. J. E. Allen of Conneaut Lake Pennsylvainia. Mr. Allen was one of the early promoters of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breed in the Pennsylvania-Ohio area. In 1948 Red bought a mare who had just placed fourth in the Celebration. GRAVEL GERTIE and Mr. Gochneaur made their first show in the Amateur Class at the Buffalo International Horse Show Buffalo, New York.
An active promoter of the breed throughout the Eastern United States, Mr. Gochneaur is Vice President of the American Walking Horse Association, of which he has been a member since 1954. In 1955, Mr. Gochneaur added another first in the horse world. He founded and was the first President of the Buckeye Walking Horse Association. This association was formed for the betterment of the Tennessee Walking Horse, and is open for membership to all residents of the State of Ohio owning, showing, or interested in Tennessee Walking Horses. The membership today exceeds 70.
Continuing to expand his Walking Horse activity since 1956, Mr. Gochneaur has owned such horses as HOT CHOCOLATE. MIDNITE NIP, LIMESTONE JIM, SIS MAUD MIDNIGHT, SUN’ S PRO- MENADER, MAC K’ S COUNTRY SQUIRE, MR. TEMPTATION, NIGHT TRAIN, and SUN’ S CELE BRATION. These horses were shown and“ tied” very well at the Celebration by their previous owners. For the past five years, Mr. Gochneaur, has won Amateur Stakes in every top show in the Eastern section of the United
States.
Today he owns a stallion, SUN S GO BOY AGAIN, who has won four World Championships at the Celebration, and a mare, SHA DOW’ S BALZE, who was reserve Champion this past year. These horses are two of the greatest shohw horses to come into the
northeast.
