TRAINING TECHNIQUES
We receive many inquiries re
garding the training techniques
used for Tennessee Walking Horses.
This is understandable and indi
cates a genuine interest on the
part of our readers. I would like
to point out that I believe we are
seeing a revolution in the Walk
ing Horse breed. The horses that
we are now producing are capable
of performing in a manner that
was not considered possible a short
time ago. Reason? Our professional
trainers are learning more and
more every day about the breed
and the various training techni
ques that can be applied to assist
a horse in developing to a maxi
mum the natural ability he has to
walk.
Our horses are stronger, more
durable and possess more stamina
than ever before. AND . . . they
are more beautiful. I have heard
it said that in 1964, bloom and con
formation will have more bearing
on show ring winners than ever
before. This is true! The Tennessee
Walking Horse is indeed a remark
able animal.
In past years we have heard a
lot about abuse and ill treatment
of Tennessee Walking Horses.
Bear in mind that we are more
aware of the criticisms of our own
breed and hear very little about
the similar problems which exist
in almost every area of horse ac
tivity where performance of the
animal is the important factor.
I would like to take the positive
approach to the situation within
our own breed and state that in
our opinion, the “Saturday Night
Showhorse” is on the way out.
The winners of today . . . and the
champions of tomorrow will not
require many of the extra train
ing devices that have been used in
the past. Our trainers are work
ing horses with more care and
more knowledge than ever before
and the horses are performing bet
ter than ever.
I once asked this question of a
seasoned trainer and breeder of
Tennessee Walking Horses: “Did
the old timers, the Brantleys, the
