PECAN HILL STABLES .
On our trip to Texas to cover the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show , we went to Dallas , Texas and had an opportunity to see several of the Walking Horse Stables in that area . One of the first places we stopped was at the Pecan Hill Stables of Mr . John Sharp in Garland , Texas . Mr . Sharp has a small , wellkept stable in which he , personally , is active as the owner and trainer . One of the first horses which he wanted to show us was DAY- DREAMER , a three year old , deep sorrel stallion out of a GO BOY mare and a MOUNTAIN MAN stud . We also saw COMMANDO , a six year old sorrel stallion and THE MAYOR , BY SUN ’ S EL DORADO out of JOE ALLEN D . A top prospect which he was particularly proud of was a young colt named WALKING FOR FUN , ( see picture ). This colt is by TRI PLE THREAT out of a granddaughter of OLD ROAN ALLEN F-38 . Mr . Sharp thoroughly enjoys his horses and likes to train and show them himself . If his prediction is true , we will be seeing more of WALKING FOR FUN . This sorrel colt is built right and loose as he can be . SUNDOWN STABLES
We stopped by to see Dub Ivins of Garland , Texas who is trainer for the Sundown Stables . They have a new all-metal barn located on a beautiful plot of ground with a regulation size ring out near the highway . Dub showed several horses at the Pin Oaks Charity Horse Show and was very pleased with his record there . The first horse that he showed us was GO

BOY ’ S RINGMASTER , a six year old stake horse that has been shown successfully three times in 1964 . Dub has made amazing progress with this horse and he should make a name for himself this year . We saw a good looking three year old mare owned by Harlan Roy of Dallas , Texas . This horse , named MARY ’ S EASTER , was second in the Junior Mare Class at the Pin Oaks Show . She is a good looking mare and has got what it takes to become a top horse . Dub also has several good horses owned by Dr . J . B . Landreth of Garland , Texas . EVANGELINE QUEEN is a dapple , grey , six year old mare , owned by the doctor ’ s daughter , Jackie . They are particularly proud of a two year old filly by SUN ’ S SEN SATION . This fancy bay filly has been shown several times this year and has tied second and third in some of the top classes of that part of the state . MAC ’ S BLUE BOY , a three year old gelding , owned by M . H . Wade of Waco , Texas , was fourth in the three year old class in the Pin Oak Show on his first time out . Dub , who worked for four years on the J . Glenn Turner ranch with Harold Kennedy , has been working at the Sundown Stables for one year . Since that time , he has made a considerable impression with the horses he has had and has good prospects for developing some top stock . BEN GARRET STABLES
Back in Dallas , after spending the morning in and around Garland , Texas , we went by the Ben Garret Stables and talked with Charlie Nash , the trainer . Charlie , who has just moved from Mississippi to take over as trainer for Mr . Garret , had just had a slight accident that laid him up for a few days . He had been working on a horses ’ shoe and a dog spooked the colt knocking Charlie to the ground where he got stepped on . His injuries didn ’ t appear to be too serious at that time , but were obviously very painful . We talked with Charlie , asking about his background and found that he has been in the Walking Horse business for quite a few years . He has previously worked for Mr . J . K . Garloch in Helena , Arkansas . In 1946 , he worked for Mr . Everett Slayden before setting up his own public stable in New Albany , Mississippi . Charlie also worked for Mr . Billy Grubb in Memphis , Tennessee for two years , and had been working in Brookhaven , Mississippi for some time before coming to work for Mr . Garret . Charlie had only been in Dallas for a short time and had barely become acquainted with the horses with which he was going to work . He mentioned SHADOW ’ S CHAR MER , a two year old sorrel filly that he had recently started . Charlie is also working MR . PERSON ALITY , the juvenile champion at the Houston show with fifteen year old Earlynne Carr of Dallas , Texas in the saddle . JOHN G ’ S GO BOY , owned by Raymond Craglow of Dallas , Texas , is an excellent three year old sorrel stud . For Mr . Garret , he is working SULTRY ’ S CHANCE , a black , two year old filly , and D ELINA ’ S PHOTO STATIC , a sorrel junior horse with a bald face that can hit that big lick . Charlie has eleven horses in training and has prospects for getting many more . We wish the best of luck for the future and hope Charlie stays out from under those horses .
