FEBRUARY, 1964 SHADOW'S NODDER Sensational Blue Ribbon winner of the 2 year old stake in the first major challenge of the 1964 Florse Show Season . . . the WINTER HAVEN Imperial Charity Horse Show. SHADOW'S NODDER, owned by Mr. Frank Roper and shown to perfection by veteran trainer Paul Smith, is by GO BOY’S SHADOW and is out of a SOCIETY MAN mare. OWNER—L. Frank Roper I WEST ORANGE STABLES TRAINER—Paul Smith I WINTER GARDEN, FLORIDA and the whole crowd is eating out of your pocket. While you are ad miring your new foals, the two year olds are getting as fresh as new paint. They are big enough to start training for the serious busi ness of being good pleasure horses. You either send them to a trainer, which adds to your cost, or you add a few more hours to a busy day. When the bill for this two- year-old is added up, you have a horse which you cannot possibly afford to sell for $125.00 to $200.00. This is the price many buyers ex pect to pay for a good pleasure horse. Suppose a buyer comes to look at the horses you have for sale; he loves the young mare with the matched stockings; how much?; when you say $500.00 or more the look on his face is one of amazed regret. This is your market—he cannot understand why the price is so far beyond his offer. After reading over the last para graph, I asked myself, what am I doing in this business? I looked out the window to find the answer. My horses were bucking and kick ing up their heels, and racing each other over the pasture, for the sheer joy of being alive. This moment of pure delight answered my question, I just naturally love horses. As for the profit, well maybe next year I am going to break even. I have felt for sometime the need for someone to try and arouse more interest in raising the Walk ing Horse for pleasure riding. If you think my ideas and suggestions would be of interest to your read ers, I would appreciate publication of this letter in the Voice. I like your new concept of the magazine, I believe it will interest a greater variety of readers. Sincerely yours, Mrs. Ruth S. Randolph, Rt.
