Mid-South Horse Show Management Forum
As usual , the managament forum of the Mid-South Horse Show Association , held in conjunction with the annual meeting , was a great help to prospective show managers for the 1964 season . The forum , ably conducted by Mr . Tom Banks , covered various phases of Horse Show Management including : Activities of Women in Horse Show Management , Outlining Horse Show Committees , Horse Show Promotion , Overall Management Problems , The Local Approach and National Magazine Assistance . A question and answer session concluded the forum and was a great help to those at- ^MrsLBlackwell started the forum
off in fine fashion with a direct approach to Women ’ s Work in Horse Show Management . She stated that she feels that women can do more than the men when it comes to getting ads . All agreed . She pointed out that the little ads that others sometimes overlook can add up to a terrific amount . Several inovations , in pointing out to the community at large how important a horse show can be , were also brought out . Specifically , she told of asking exhibitors from out of town to cash their prize checks in town before leaving . This , she explained , would indicate to businessmen how horse shows bring people into the town for a horse show and also show them that these people have money to spend . A new approach to obtaining trophies was also mentioned . She stated that several stamp companies are now offering trophies in return for trading stamps . Save those stamps , ladies !
Mr . Fred Minton , member of the board of directors , covered the organization of horse show management by briefly outlining the various committees and functions necessary to operate a show . Those mentioned were : ( 1 ) Location ( commute to find location for show , make arrangements to rent , lease , etc . property ); ( 2 ) Lighting Committee ; ( 3 ) Parking ( Spectators and Exhibitors ); ( 4 ) Promotion Committee ( should handle all phases including newspaper publicity , street marking for directions , paid ads at local level , etc .); ( 5 ) Grounds Committee ( To handle all phases of grounds for horse show , including water facilities , rest rooms , etc .); ( 6 ) Refreshments Committee ( should handle setting up of proper eating facilities for exhibitors and spectators ); ( 7 ) Entrees and Ribbons ( Should enter horses , handle all ribbons , trophies and manage checks to winners ); ( 8 ) Decorations Committee ; ( 9 ) Ring Committee ( to handle setting up of ring , preparing ring for horses , installing P . A . system , setting up center of ring to accommodate judges , ring-

master , organist , ribbon girls , etc ) ■ ( 10 ) Music Committee ( to arrange for organist and organ for show ) - ( 11 ) Program Committee ( to handle printing of program , etc .)
It was pointed out by Mr . Minton that the most important person in putting on a horse show is the general manager . He must be the person who expedites all phases of the show to see that everything operates smoothly and that everyone does their job .
Mr . Bob Witt , of the Nashville Banner-Tennessean , recipient of a special recognition award as Horse Show News Reporter of the Year and experienced horse show reporter , pointed out the value of proper handling of news and publicity material both before and after a horse show . He suggested that publicity be broken down into several stories . For instance , a release with picture could be made on the organization committee , another on the ring committee setting up the ring , another on the prize committee reviewing ribbons and trophies and any other specific committee functions that are worthy of mention and of interest to local people . Mr . Ed Eckerds , prominent nationally known horse show manager and judge , was asked to speak to the group and to answer any questions pertaining to operation of the larger shows . He pointed out that organization and group effort is the only road to a successful show whether large or small . He stated that at the local level the most important factor to drawing a crowd is the local newspaper . He emphasized that the local news media can print only what they are provided with and that most will cooperate fully in helping a worthy project such as a horse show .
Mr . Leon Hall , from Hillsboro , Missouri , was asked to participate in the question and answer session and elaborated on several elements of promotion and general publicity . An excellent idea was brought out regarding the inclusion of the names of local newspaper on every entry blank so that winners names could be forwarded to the newspaper after the show . He also sug-
