Bits & Spurs BITS AND SPURS By Sharon Terry Feel the suspense and excitement in the air! Celebration time is just around the corner and everyone is getting ready for the big event. I have just returned from a trip to Middle Tennessee, and while in Shelbyville, I visited the Celebra tion grounds. Work on the barns is already underway and the biggest improvement is the moving of the light poles behind the grandstand. One of the first places I went to in Tennessee was Vic Thompson’s. Not only did I watch many top horses work, but I crossed the road to the stallion barn to have a look at the great syndicated stallions. MAMA’S BLACK SOUTHERN AIRE worked good, and I had the privilege of riding him. I highly recommend a tour of the Vic Thompson Stables during the Cele bration. My next stop was at Preach Fleming’s, also in Shelbyville. Preach was working a mighty nice SUN DUST two year old that had quite a resemblance to MR. SEN SATION. He also has SHADOW’S GAY LADY, one of the best mares out. While cooling off in the air con ditioned tack room of the Toby Green-Buddy Hugh Stables, I had a nice chat with Buddy. A very good prospect to win the junior stake this year is GUNSMOKE’S SON, the black stallion owned by Bark ley Brock of Clinton, Missouri. 56 SON has really made some out standing shows so far, and his blues include the Shelbyville P T A, Clarksville, Tenn., and Chapel Hill. Dr. Nathan Thomas and J. B. Alexander, both of Shelbyville, own a fine bay two year old stal lion named SHADOW’S MOTION MAN, who has never placed lower than second. Mrs. Madeline Lee has been winning ladies classes all summer on her great mare, SPUR’S SUMMER DREAM. Toby won the stake in Clarksville on JET’S ROCKET STAR for J. H. Bowman and Son of Shelbyville. Buddy worked CHIMNEY SWEEP for me, and she is one of the best two year old fillies I’ve seen all season. Mabrun Magnusson has all his horses at the Celebration grounds now. DARK JET OF MIDNIGHT, his good aged black stallion, was second in Guntersville. Maburn says one of his most promising horses is his three year old stal lion. PERFECTION’S SHIEK. Ma- brun’s striking junior mare, PIN UP’S JEWEL, has won several blues this year, one of them La fayette. Everyone plan now to at tend Mabrun’s big dispersal sale to be held the first Monday of the Celebration. I spent a very profitable after noon at S. W. Beech’s admiring all the colts. The one and only MERRY GO BOY was just as beautiful as ever, and looked young enough to be a seven year old! Steve is very proud of his lovely GO BOY wean ling filly. I don’t blame him. She sure is pretty. I’d like to steal her! Mr. W. R. Mitchell of Mobile, Ala bama, had just purchased a gorge ous black yearling stallion called GO BOY’S BLACK GOLD. Mr. Mitchell is the owner of the wide ly acclaimed GO BOY’S SCOOT ER, who has been doing real well this year. In Shelbyville, I ran into some good friends from Searcy, Ark ansas, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reid, who had brought their pony to Vic’s to get him ready for the Cele bration. This pony, MR. TALK OF THE TOWN, won the Sparta pony class with Bill Reid in the saddle, and also won the open class at Batesville, Miss. The Reids proudly own the speedy GO BOY’S RED ROOSTER, aged chestnut stallion. (Continued on Page 59) NOW... for the first time!
