HORSE BUSINESS ( Continued From Page 44 ) materials : 1 ) An automobile or truck wheel rim ; 2 ) Five 10 ' lengths of 2 " Black Pipe ; 3 ) A good 3 ' 4 H . P . electric motor ; 4 ) The transmission from an old truck ( preferably a four forward speed model ); 5 ) The rearend ( Differential ) of an old car or truck ; 6 ) The Universal Joint of a similar make ; 7 ) At least 60 running feet of 2 " angleiron ; 8 ) Two 12 " dual belt pullies and one 3 " dual belt pully and 9 ) One 3 / 4 " steel axle about three feet long .
AUTOMATIC WALKER in operation . Note bracing both horizontal and vertical . Note enclosure around walking area to keep horses in proper position .
Construction is by no means simple and the services of a good metal worker with a welder and torch will be required . The recommended approach is to build the ground frame and mount all basic components as indicated in the photograph . Remember that exacting measurements will be necessary to allow free movement of all parts and eliminate extra friction and wear . The operational process is relatively simple : The electric motor motivates the pullies that turns the transmission ( geared to the proper speed ) which turns the universal joint which rotates the vertical center post and turns the “ automatic walker ”. All four forward speeds can be used but the most effective is low , which should move about 6 revolutions per minute .
The base frame should be bolted to a concrete foundation at least 6 " thick and if at all possible the center post should be secured at the top at a pivot point . This will give you a very strong “ walker ” that will give good service with a minimum of breakdown and repair . Anything that you can do to make it stronger will be to your advantage .
Well . . . it ’ s up to you now ! As most of you realize the “ automatic walker ” is nothing new to many stables as they have been in use for many years , however to those of you who are new in the business or are trying to up-grade your operation you will find that it will save time and money and is much easier on the horses .
NOTE : Just as we went to press we received a letter from W . E . Pieper , President of Waldon Farms , Milwaukee , Wisconsin who has developed some new ideas on the construction of the “ Automatic Cooler ”. We will have more on this in the May issue . Our thanks to Mr . Pieper .
