PROFESSIONALS ON PARADE
( Continued )
Buddy is married to the former Viola Hancock , daughter of Mr . and Mrs . Harlin Hancock . Viola was also raised in the vicinity of Milton , and after being high school sweethearts they were married . Don , their 4 year old son is not quite old enough to show an active interest in his dad ’ s business , but does show an interest in the horses . Viola shares her husband ’ s seriousness in his profession and one can usually find her working in the office of Murray Farms , especially during the Murray Farm Sales .
Over the years Buddy has watched the Walking Horse grow in popularity to become the most popular breed of light horses in the nation . He feels that careful breeding has increased the fineness in the entire breed . Like many other trainers , he feels that the amateur horsemen own and show the best stake horses today , thus providing the top market . Buddy is an excellent judge , because he ties horses the way he sees them in a specific show .
Here is a professional that has achieved a unique reputation in the Walking Horse world , a reputation for excellence as a trainer , a judge and a businessman . Perhaps the most complimentary thing that could be said about Buddy Black is that he is uncontroversial . He is liked and admired by other trainers , as well as by the vast majority of Walking Horse enthusiasts over the country .
NEW YORKERS PLEASED WITH TENNESSEE AND WALKING HORSES
The next time you have visitors from out of town be sure to carry them on a tour of the Walking Horse Stables in your area . You may be surprised at the results . Mr . L . C . Fritzsche of Shelbyville relates to us just such an experience that ended in the sale of a pleasure horse for the Fred Phillips Stables of Shelbyville . Dr . H . W . Norris , Mr . K . S . Van Dermort and Mr . C . A . Stak , Sr ., a trainer , all of Vestal , New York , made a recent visit to the “ home of the Celebration ” and were obviously pleased . This was their first visit to the Volunteer State and to real Walking Horse country . They liked what they saw enough to plan a return visit in September . After viewing the Celebration grounds and getting the “ grand tour ” of several stables around town they decided they just had to “ get their feet wet ” and buy at least one bonafide Tennessee Walking Horse .
Everyone who loves the breed as Mr . Fritzsche should follow his example and actively promote the breed at the personal level . We can create new interest , new customers and new promoters for the breed , to the mutual benefit of all .
NEW WALKING HORSE ASSOCIATION FORMED IN INDIANA
By William H . Borland
The Indiana Walking Horse Association got its charter membership signed up on March 15 , 1964 , at its first charter membership meeting held at Bob Bickham ’ s walking horse training stables in Indianapolis , Indiana . In addition to a Board of Directors , the following officers were elected . President , Dr . B . P . Neer , Bloomfield , Indiana ; Vice President , Mr . Robert Ulery , Peru , Indiana ; Vice President , Mr . Harold Asbury , Marshall , Indiana ; Treasurer , Harold Hayes , Jasper , Indiana ; and Secretary , Mrs . C . E . Sampson , Peru , Indiana .
The group elected a board of directors to serve for one year . Those elected were : Mr . Harry Neer , Terre Haute , Indiana , Mr . Wallace Bartolac , Crown Point , Indiana , Mr . C . E . Sampson , Peru , Indiana , Mr . Harold Hayes , Jasper , Indiana , and Mr . Bob Bickham , Indianapolis , Indiana .
In talking to the people on the Board of Directors it was brought out that this organization intends to build on the basis that Walking Horses are fun both for pleasure and show . Their main objective is to promote more wide spread interest in Walking Horses throughout the state , as a family horse . It is expected that wider participation in shows throughout the state will be the result of this club ’ s interest ; and it is their intent to place more emphasis on the Tennessee Walker as a pleasure horse , to be used for all purposes .
At their charter meeting , a great deal of discussion was held concerning their plans for a futurity program to be organized as soon as possible . This could mean a great deal to general improvement of the Walking Horse Breed in Indiana . It would be interesting indeed to see some more Indiana horses in the ribbons at the Celebration in Tennessee !
This group promises to become an active group and no doubt will be holding some shows of their own in the near future . Mr . Bickham at Hidden Meadow Stables , in Indianapolis , has plenty of room for showing , in addition to his excellent indoor training facilities . We understand that Peterman- Pontiac Stables of Crown Point is planning a show for April 26 , 1964 . Watch for lots of Walking Horse action in this show .
Meetings of this group are to be held monthly , we understand , with the next meeting of the membership on April 12 , at the Bickham Stables in Indianapolis . We know that anyone interested in Walking Horses should become associated with this group .
