Two of these fine colts will be in the show ring this season. Mr. Bourne states that he is 68 years young and rides his walking horses every week on the trail from five to twenty miles. Congratulations on the“ Walking Horses in the Field” article in the March issue comes from Mrs. Miriam Merris of Humbocah, Iowa. She says that her part of the country is not now Walking Horse country but that interest is growing. Mrs. Merris lauds the praises of her Walking Horse LADY H., who carries her on many a trail with Quarter Horses and Arabians and has covered 30 miles with her in comfort. She also states that the Tennessee Walking Horse in the show ring is“ a thrill to watch” and the many fine breeders and trainers who have helped develop this breed to its current status are to be congratulated.“ To have a good mount, spirited yet gentle, swift of foot yet easy in the saddle, willing and untiring is sheer joy. All of these things spell Tennessee Walking Horse”... so states Mrs. Merris.

Currently active in many phases of Walking Horse activity, Mr. Burgess judged the 1963 Silver Anniversary Breeders Futurity at the Celebration last year. He has judged the Celebration and has been an amateur trainer and exhibitor for years. He is looked on by many as one of the“ Patron Saints” of the Tennessee Walking Horse in the great state of Arkansas. With such active and dedicated people as Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Burgess supporting the breed over the years it is no wonder that the Tennessee Walking Horse is now the nation’ s greatest horse for show and pleasure. Our thanks to these fine people for allowing us to visit with them awhile and to relate to you some of their background and experiences in the Walking Horse world.
