scene of the auction, which was housed in a large tent next to the training barn.
GOLDEN SUNDUST, World’ s Champion gelding in 1961 and 1962, topped the sale at $ 6,000, as W. P. Howell, Jr., of Sweetwater, Tennessee, sold the famous horse to Lou Williams of Eugene, Oregon.
A new worlds record for the sale of a yearling Tennessee Walking filly was established when Don Decker, of Omaha, Nebraska, paid Steve Hill, of Beech Grove, Tennessee, $ 5,500 for his World’ s Champion yearling GO BOY’ S LULU. This beautiful filly also was awarded the blue ribbon in her class at the Breeders’ Association National Futurity, held Saturday night, August 31. She is by MERRY GO BOY out of a mare by MIDNIGHT SUN and is thus the result of the crossing of the two most renowned bloodlines in the modern history of the Tennessee Walking Horse.
Among other notable sales at this auction were: a two-year-old stallion by MACK K’ S HANDSHAKER, sold by Zollie Derryberry to Wallace Brandon for a bid of $ 5,500; a MIDNIGHT SUN marc and her colt by MERRY GO BOY, sold by J. C. Ford to Lyle Cashion, Jr., for a bid of $ 3,700; a yearling colt sired by MERRY GO BOY, sold for a bid of $ 3,500.
The sale of Show Ring Champions is expected to become an annual highlight of Celebration Week in Shelbyville.
