The Editor Thinks This Is The ' Greatest '
We have an Open Letter to H . L . Worrell of Goodlettsville that we want all our friends to read :
“ My Dear Friend :
“ When you clasped my hand and I told you some days ago that ' I appreciate the confidence and trust you have in me — I guarantee to do you a good job ,’ I meant exactly that .
“ But at that time I had no idea at all that you had turned me loose absolutely on the best Tennessee Walking News Story of All Time — and that in developing it at the Curley Printing Co . of Nashville would publish the best horse magazine ever , anywhere that has been produced by human hands .

Friends — I do not want to dwell upon my recovery from my recent illness . It was a purely imaginary Mental Depression and I came out of it like someone turning on the light . I personally believe God himself had a very great deal to do with this . And Mary Frances and I thank him with all the gratitude a human heart can express . Those who love us and understand us are especially asked to join us in this expression . Yours sincerely Ben A . Green
“ None of this would have been possible without the printers and the pressmen and the mailing room workers who are publishing and sending out more than 4,000 copies of this magazine to the Tennessee Walking Horse World . And we are holding every form as-is for a solid month , because 1 would not be surprised to find the people demanding another run .
“ What I most appreciate is that you have not told me how to do a job that I have been training myself in 40 years of newspapering to do whenever opportunity presented itself to me .
“ When you decided to remain in the Tennessee Walking Horse business with a brand ‘ new life ’ with brand new young horses you did many things for this big world . You shut aside the tranquilizing influences of so-called ‘ elderly life ’ and dared to venture anew . And you did it with horses that are show horses — parading their prowess to a cheering throng at night , and that very day they may have sired a future champion of the world .
“ This is rarely done in the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeding Business . But you are making history by doing it with young horses who can carry on this kind of activity . Dr . M . E . Ensminger , the great nationally recognized horse authority , haslamented the fact that it takes two mares to get one foal in one year — because
man has departed from nature , and put his breeding stallions into stalls where they do not get much exercise .
“ You , my courageous friend , have brought Nature back into the picture . You are doing it with stallions and it can also be done with mares — like E . M . Dement of blessed memory did it with mares many years ago . I hope someone will catch the spirit from you , and have show mares that go out into the ring and win ribbons — then return to the stall and let a colt nurse . Mr . Dement did that with the great Merry Legs F-4 , and at the Tennessee State Fair to boot . He did it in the Major League .
“ I am certain you will do the same thing with Son ’ s Successor , age 3 ; Son ’ s Worthy Boy , age 4 ; My Palomino Pal , age 6 . They will win shows and sire show winners — because they will be trained to get activity , and will be shown to get activity , and they will perpetuate the breed to get activity . It ’ s all all just like human beings . A horse age 3 is like a boy or girl at about 18 , etc . And multiply the other horses ’ ages by about six times and you get the right human answers .
“ Let me here and now renew my personal pledge to you that I will climb all the mountains in the road and fight anyone within range — in the drive to make your young horses get recognition as sires of fully pedigreed horses . I ’ ll fight for youth anywhere , any day against the shackles that older people often tend to place upon them . And 1 fight best when I fight for the love of it , no pay whatever except understanding and appreciation — but maybe expenses .
“ This open letter has said enough . I could wirte a book in appreciation of the opportunity you have given me .
“ Let me write one more paragraph . Our plans for the entrance two-page picture were weathered out ; and the pictures of the horses were taken in your barn with tornado conditions outisde , rain blasting the roof , wind sweeping the countryside , lightning splitting the sky ... by a young photographer who has never before taken inside pictures of horses — in fact precious few pictures of horses in any condition . His name is Douglas Richardson , and he came when I hollered for help . I would rather have one such young man with me in an emergency , than the world ’ s best horse photographer that ever lived who could be walking outside in the rain and not doing the job . Your brave horses were unafraid of these unusual conditions — because they trust Floyd King and Fred Brake and their associates who run your great horse breeding establishment . More power to you — your whirling dervish of Goodlettsville who will never grow old . BEN A . GREEN ”
