Girl , 8 , Shares Savings And Grief IVith Owner Who Lost Horses In Fire
Horselovers of the nation recently enjoyed a press report from Louisville , Ky ., telling of a 8-year-old Bedford , Indiana girl ’ s gift to a multimillionaire Louisville hotelman who lost several yearlings in a fire at Churchill Downs .
The letter from Susanna Matthews to J . Graham Brown of Louisville read : " Dear Mr . Brown : " My name is Susanna Lynn Matthews and I am eight years old . I read about the bad fire you had in your stables and felt very badly about it . ” 1 love horses very much . “ All my color books , story books pointed out that last year the three stallions in the Decker-Corn setup had last year registered hundreds of colts in their names — whereby through syndicate operations the turnout would be greatly limited and mares given service will all be of superior quality .
His viewpoint is echoed from Florida to California — where people who know about the Walking Horse business express the general conclusion “ the syndicate is good for the breed and especially helpful to the little man who has a stallion who needs some exercise .”
Elsewhere in this Voice is an exclusive photograph taken by the Voice Editor showing Midnight Mack K and Sun-Dust within 30 feet of each other at Thompson ’ s Stables . “ These stallions are so jealous of each other that it would have been dangerous to bring them closer together ,” Vic told Editor Green . The shaky Editor agreed .
Shares in the syndicate are being offered to interested parties who should communicate with Decker in Omaha , Corn in Brentwood , and Thompson in Shelbyville . The Merry Go Boy operation at Beech ’ s Stables is also fully underway . It is understood that owners of shares in the great stallions are offering to sell “ seasons ” for 1963 as the first syndicate breeding plan in the history of the Tennessee Walking Horse breed gets under way with full force .
and books I read at the library are about horses . I ride my cousin ’ s horse a lot . His name is Scout . I have $ 56 saved on a horse . I went to Calumet Farm on our vacation one summer . 1 pelted a colt through a fence until his or her mother came . We stopped at Churchill Downs but it was closed .
“ I know how you feel about it , so I ' m sending 50 cents out of my Christmas money to help you with your new barn .
“ When I heard about the fire I was very sad about it and 1 know you were loo . I hope you have good luck with your race horses , and maybe some day I can come and see you race some of

A lively correspondence via tape recordings has developed between an English family which loves horses — and residents of Columbia , Tenn ., where the Tennessee Walking Horse Spring Jubilee is an annual feature .
The correspondence began when William A . Orman of Columbia read a magazine ad signed by David A . Wiseman of Acton , London , England . Orman began sending tapes recorded at his photo shop and Wiseman replied in kind , telling of his experience with a cavalry unit — the “ Queen ' s Royal Life Guard ,” how he cared for his horse , and also served with another unit in Korea .
The tape correspondence developed considerable exchange of horse information .
Marshall Ledbetter , Sr ., a leader in Tennessee Walking Horse activities in Columbia , has taken a prominent part in the tape correspondence . At his invitation Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington ( then in office ) and other state officials joined in the correspondence with messages to the Wiseman family , including daughter , Sandy . Friends of the Wisemans in England also began to talk to their American friends by tape . More than 150 Columbia friends have joined in the exchange .
Mr . Orman told the Wisemans “ Tennessee is noted for its famous Walking Horses and its beautiful women ,” and the Wisemans expressed the hope of visiting the state some day and seeing the ’ Walking Horses .
The friendship developed by the tape correspondence has attracted wide interest — and the Columbia Rotary Club members at a weekly meeting called the Wisemans by trans-Atlantic telephone to express their interest . Lt . Col . Wiseman replied with a letter to the Columbia Daily Herald that added more fuel to the friendship fire — as the unusual club program was reported in several London newspapers .
