25 This issue of the VOICE features
“Youth in the Saddle” and is in
tended as a salute to the thousands
of young Americans who enjoy
wholesome recreation through
caring for, riding and showing
their Tennessee Walking Horses
and Ponies.
In an age when the word juve
nile is most commonly connected
with delinquency in the popular
vocabulary, it is indeed refreshing
to find juvenile connected with
riders in the thousands of horse
show programs which we see each
season. Certainly there is no one
simple cure-all for the problems
of our society, but there can be no
doubting that the time young peo
ple spend in training and riding
can lead to more balanced and
wholesome lives. In working dili
gently with their horses, boys and
girls have a wonderful outlet for
their energies and their desires to
accomplish something. They can
learn a sense of responsibility by
looking after the needs of their
horses. In show-ring competition
they can learn to win with hu
mility and grace and to lose with
out anger and complaints. They
have the opportunity to learn what
we call sportsmanship.
In a very real sense the true
future of the Walking Horse de
pends upon the development in
young people of sincere interest
in the breed. From our observation
of hundreds of young riders, the
future of the breed is in good
hands. There is, however, a great
responsibility upon the older gen
eration of horse lovers to set good
examples of dedication, honesty,
integrity and fairness before these
brilliant youths. They are going to
be only as good as we help them
to become.
