Woman Asks Why White Horses

’ t Win ; We Give 3 Answers s @ 5ay s 7Siste Horses Do Win

A woman reader in a Southern Stale writes the Voice Editor as follows :
" Will you please tell me where I can find out what bloodlines are best in the breed ?
" We are vti v new and green where it concerns horses , having fallen in love with two Palominos . We bought them in good laith to discover now that one has two weak knees and is dangerous to ride . We paid triple what each w as worth .
“ Since that lime we have discovered the Tennessee Walking Horse and are considering a colt of ( stallion ’ s name ) belonging to a Mr .
. of ....................... The agent who is trying to sell us a colt says , although Mr . does not show ' his horses their get are consistently in the winner class . I have searched your magazine but have come on no white winners , although I see several new colls registered who might be progenies .
“ Personally 1 prefer a white horse but my daughter wants to show the horse we purchase . Is there some reason that the white horse does not win ?”
The Voice Editor will attempt to answer this triple-barreled question in order :
1 — There is considerable difference of opinion as to what distinct bloodlines are best . So in this letter personally we will mention several and not define any “ best .”
2 — As for white horses of the breed — they are rather few now and the sheer w ' eight of numbers would find the solid color horses tied far more than the white entries . White Star , a mare , was Grand Champion of the World in 1954 . Maid of Cotton , Cotton Stockings and many other white horses were superior animals in the show ring — as the records show .
1 talked to a trainer and he gave me two ideas . The white horse shown under the lights is a dramatic figure , but a white horse ’ s mistakes are far easier to detect than the mistakes of a solid color horse — as the dark horses tend to blur under the lights . It is like a woman with a white glove on one hand and a black glove on the other . The white glove stands out against the darkness and can be seen far more readily .
One other point is that white and roan horses cannot stand as much work under the sun — because the pigment of their skin makes a white animal easier to sunburn , blister , etc . And one other point too — as honesty goes — is that it is far more difficult to " doctor up ” the feet of a white horse to get that extra big lick — because the medicine used shows up far more clearly on the white .
But there are some good white horses today — as always .

Q —" Please send your recommendations for size and construction of a riding track . Gerald Kees , P . O . Box 556 , Brookhaven , Miss .
A — The Celebration track , accepted as a world standard for horse shows , measures 300 feet by 150 feet with a dirt track 37 1-2 feet wide all the way around . However , for a private or practice track , 1 would suggest one the size of the Celebration infield that measures 225 feet long and 75 feet
