Hamm (better known with the Horse Show people as "Ken”) and Mrs. Hamm (better known as June and daughter Sheila who does the riding) all of New Albany, Ind.. sojourned to Tennessee and Walking Horse Country last summer to buy a to yearling fillv. At first they went to Murfreesboro and head-quartered there for ten days. They spent each day beating the bushes and searching for the "just right" filly to no avail. After this 1 utile effort and about 1,500 miles of driving to first one farm then another, the family went to Shelbvville to take up residence in a home they had rented for the National Celebration and the search was con tinued. By this time no less that 47 year ling fillies had been considered and rejected, and it looked like the trailer was going to be pulled back to New Albany empty. There were so many things to con sider. Breeding: Ken definitely wanted a Merry Go Boy line bred filly. Color: Sheila wanted black with a little white marking. June, as is her custom, wanted Ken and Shelia to he satisfied. The daily search was continued and finally the trio in desperation came to the conclusion that the desired filly had not been bred yet. So that the effort would not be com pletely wasted, Mr. Hamm bought a double bred Wilson Allen broodmare at Vic Thompson’s Sale of Champions. He was determined that the trailer would not he lowed home empty. Time was running out. On the last day of the Celebration a vacant seat in the family box was offered to one W. L. Perkinson of Birmingham, Ala. By way of conver sation between classes, Mr. Perkinson mentioned that he had a couple of colts on the grounds to sell. Where upon “Ken," still eager and still search ing, made arrangements to look at them and immediately after the show did just that. BELOVED ANGEL At this point little hope remained that the three horse lovers would find a suitable filly and might even con sider a horse coll. They approached the stall with waning enthusiasm. And there she stood! Angel’s Dawn by Angel’s Go Boy out of Betty’s Go Girl by Merry Go Boy. A Beautiful Black Filly with all the grace and manners of a princess. A dream was materializing! The impossible was being accomplished! This vision of horse-llesh with two grandparents who were world’s grand champions was to fill the empty side of the Hamm's horse trailer and also their hearts. Beloved Angel, as we prefer to call her, is now in training at the Walk ing W Stables at Glasgow, Ky., under the able hand of Carl Young who is Manager-Trainer. Many visitors, who have watched her work, including some top trainers and judges, think she will he the mare of the future and perhaps even better than her paternal Grand Dam, Black Angel (World’s Grand Champion in 19-13). Beloved Angel is a Futurity filly. She took the 7th place ribbon in the Weanling Division at the 19G1 Cele- Hcrc’s a half-sister, Midnight Silver Queen by Itllie Midnight out a/ Hetty's Go Girl, 8 months old, and For Sale.
