Hill, Burris Win Futurity Saddle Classes

Sieve Beech of Belfast, Term., a 148-pound, sandy-haired, 19-year-old MTSC junior— son and grandson of famous Tennessee Walking Horse breeders— Saturday night, Aug. 25, 1962, walked two Merry Go Boy-sired colts to first blue ribbons in greatest National Futurity among 24 held by the Tennessee Walking Breeders’ & Exhibitors ' Assn, of America, Inc.
His father, S. W. Beech, Jr.,( who is president of the association), showed a yearling filly for another blue. The other non-saddle class in the Futurity was won by a Go Boy’ s Shadowsired weanling horse colt led by Leslie Dycus.
More than 2,500 spectators( a Futurity record for recent years), saw the Saturday night Celebration prelude at the Celebration Grounds— climaxed by outstanding saddle classes of two-yearolds in which two“ old-timers” of the ring rode to victory.
Steve Hill of Beech Grove, who has ridden in all 23 Celebrations to date, piloted Mysterious Shadow’ to the blue ribbon and a trophy in the two-yearold horse colt class over seven other veteran competitors. This high-stepping, long-striding black colt was sired by Go Boy’ s Shadow ' out of Mysterious.
Bob Burris of Franklin, riding Gov. Buford Ellington’ s beautiful mare, Sun’ s Queen Cathy,( a frequent winner in Middle Tennessee show ' s this season), took first in the other saddle class that had nine entries. Queen Cathy was sired by the famous Midnight Sun out of Go Boy’ s Serenadebeing the result of a merger of the tw ' o greatest bloodlines in modern Tennessee Walking Horse history.
Blue ribbon winners led by Steve Beech were: weanling Go Boy’ s Little Flirt, owned by S. W. Beech, Jr.; sired by Merry Go Boy out of Merry Boy’ s Sassy Sue yearling horse coll Go Boy’ s Skylark B., owned by Ii. W. Brown, Columbia, Tenn., sired by Merry Go Boy out of Nodding Star.
S. W. Beech, Jr., led to victory yearling Go Boy’ s Jacqueline, owned by Beech and Sheriff Clyde Orton of Carothersville, Mo. This filly was sired by Merry Go Boy out of Merry Sal. She was weanling winner in 1961.
Shadow’ s Cavalier, led by Dycus for Dr. T. k. Young, Columbia, Tenn., took the weanling horse colt class. He was sired by Go Boy’ s Shadow out of Pride’ s Queen H.
There were 111 colls shown in the entire Futurity( out of 171 originally entered) for a new record.
Colts sired by Merry Go Boy took 32 of the 57 ribbons awarded. It was the richest Futurity in history with $ 7,500 awarded in prize money, Executive Secretary Tom FI. Fulton of the association announced. The judge was Ed Carothers of Franklin, Tenn. Ribbons for other sires were widely distributed. National futurity results were:
