" TROUBLE " Traced To Civil War Days
A recent letter inquired about the background of Trouble— listed in Vol. I of the Breeders’ Assn. Stud Registry as follows:
“ TROUBLE 370306, property of Beech Sc Endsley, Belfast, Term,( in about 1939). Sorrel horse; both hind socks, star, snip; foaled May 20, 1936; bred by S. A. Peterson, Farmington, Tenn. SIRE, Last Chance 350034. DAM, Nellie Essay 370016.”
Last Chance is widely known as being bred by A. M. Dement, Wartrace, Tenn. This stallion was by Hunter’ s Allen F-10 out of Merry Legs F-4.
Nellie Essay’ s lineage is less understood. She is also listed in Vol. I as follows:
" NELLIE ESSAY, property of S. A. Peterson, Farmington, Tenn. Sorrel mare; star; foaled May 9, 1920; bred by Sam Lentz. SIRE, Red Hal; Red Hal’ s dam by Hal Sumner, III, by Hal Sumner F-7; DAM, Sadie B, by Sims’ Wilkes F-37.
Hal Sumner was a great, great grandson of the great Tom Hal F-20. He was a roan horse, sired by Sumner Hal, by Steel’ s Priam, by Toggins Hal, by Tom Hal F-20. Sumner Hal’ s dam was a Priam mare, by Priam( 254 A. T. R.), by Flying Cloud( 134 A. T. R.)
The dam of Hal Sumner was Sunshine, by Pat Malone F-27. This latter foundation stallion was sired by Mohawk, by Clardy’ s Copperbotlom. Pat Malone ' s dam was Betsy Baker, by Algerine, by a Whip horse; 2d dam by Sugg’ s Stump, by Stump The Dealer; 3rd dam Featherstone’ s Old Roan. That goes back to the Civil War period.
From Washington, New Jersey
Learned about a brand new Washington from Wm. C. Cullen, Jr., of Route 1, Washington, N. J. He wrote for a sample Voice, Mary Frances mailed him one copy. But Bill writes back in a hurry to say thanks and he adds:“ It reads good and I think the same warrants a subscription for which I am enclosing my check, four dollars for the subscription and five dollars for the training book.” Seems that our sample plan is doubly good. As long as we“ read good” to enough people we will have it made. Many thanks for Friend Cullen. BAG.
