Voice of the Tennessee Walking Horse
5-Year Quest
Nets Big Nail
For Richards
W. D. Richards of Blue Ribbon
Leather Co., Shelbyville, Tenn., al
most wore out his pants pockets carry
ing around a specimen of his No. Ifi
horseshoe nail for five years. He was
hunting a manufacturer willing to
make this size nail—in quantity.
Finally he found one—in Sweden
on his 11th annual trip to Europe
buying for his firm.
There was one point about it,
however. Richards had to order two
tons (4,000 pounds) of the big nails.
He did so, and eventually the order
arrived at Shelbyville in 40 boxes that
weighed like “a box of nails.”
One buyer called for 800 pounds
soon after their arrival. More orders
came, and Richards is about to call
his Swedish supplier and have him
start nail-making anew.
Horseshoers all over the U.S.A.,
Canada and elsewhere are using the
“big nail” nowadays. It meets the
special situation caused by so manv
built-up shoes, and it makes unneces
sary the welding of shorter nails to
do the trick—according to reports.
Horse show fans will also like the
shorter show, because interruptions
for thrown shoes had become bother
some, causing shows to run unduly
long in some instances.
Please Don't Worry
L. E. Davenport, 1427 NW 47th St.,
Oklahoma City, 18, Okla. is worrying
about us. 1-Ie writes: “I particularly
enjoyed the article and picture of the
Greens on Page 5 (June issue). You
seem like such wonderful homey folks.
But, don’t work too hard. We want
you to stay around for a long, long
time.” (L.E.D., do not let Mary
Frances “sitting quietly” for a picture
fool you. Her eyes are like perpetu
ally winking stars, her smile is as per
manent as the sun, and she’s as lively
as a barefoot 3-year-old on a hot side
walk. And yes, Brother, she can cook
Grits too! So we will neither starve
nor just fade out if these subscriptions
keep piling in as they have recently.
Do not worry, Friend. BAG)
