An interesting 7,000-mile, 7-week
round trip journey from Bellingham,
Wash., to Shelbyville, Tenn. and vi­
cinity is reported by Walter Hansey of
2920 Birchwood Ave., in a letter dated
Nov. 13.
He says his wife and daughter ac­
companied him on the long ride in
their new pick-up truck, camper and
horse trailer. They spent over two
weeks in the Shelbyville vicinity.
Returning they took with them Go
Boys Traveler, purchased July 18,
from Myron Wolaver of near Pulaski,
Tenn., father of Douglas Wolaver who
rode Mack K's Handshaker to the
I960 World’s Grand Championship
at the Celebration. Go Boys Traveler
is a 2-year-old trained by Douglas.
Reader Hansey says Go Boys Trav­
eler is a full brother of Go Boy's
Skylark, the 1961 World’s Champion
yearling who was sold for $4,200 at
the Murray Farm Sale—reported to be
highest price ever brought at auction
for a yearling of the breed. Both Sky­
lark and Traveler are by Merry Go
Boy out of Nodding Star.
On their return trip of more than
3,000 miles the Hanseys “had no prob­
lem whatsoever,” says Walter. Go
Boys Traveler loaded and hauled
wonderfully well. We would take him
out and exercise him about every
four hours. The people along the way
were very helpful in finding good
night accomodations for our horse,
which we appreciated. The trip home
was so pleasant we are thinking very
seriously of making the same trip
next year and purchasing a couple of
well-bred broodmares.
“We are located in the very North­
west corner of the United States, 20
miles from the Canadian border and
right on Puget Sound, the Pacific
Ocean. Therefore, it so happens we
are the the furthest distance away
from Shelbyville of any place in the
U.S.A. We want to thank Mr. S. W.
Beech for courtesies and time spent
with us helping us locate Go Boys
T raveler.
“We plan to stand Go Boys Trav­
eler at public service during the next
breeding season ... he is the only
direct Merry Go Boy stallion in the
Slate of Washington,” Hansey said.
He also extended congratulations to
S. L. (Speed) Weidner of Coeur D'­
Alene, Idaho, for taking a Merry Go
Boy stallion—Merry Go Midnight—to
the Idaho area, as reported in the
October issue of the Voice. Bea Walker of Walker’s Tennessee
Walkers, 7235 Almond Avenue,
Orangeville, Calif., is all out for pro­
motion of the breed as a pleasure
horse.
She was raised in the Ozarks, never
knew you could ride anything but a
Walker, moved to California in 1940
and found lots of other breeds. Twen­
ty years later she found an 18-year-
old Walker mare in foal to Merry Go
Boy and her colts have "walked into
the hearts of all who see them.” Has
just weaned her third colt, Merry
Golighlly.
She and her husband have six
Walkers, including a stallion, Pin
Hawk of Merry Boy-Wilson Allen
breeding—standing at a reasonable fee.
On Sept. 14 they sold their first
colt, 18 months old, completely
trained as far as you can take a young
colt. She says he was loaded in and
out of the trailer, bridled, saddled,
mounted, unafraid of general traffic.
“We feel that we’ve taken a giant step
in this first sale,” she writes.
“Let’s get behind the Walking
Horse for pleasure,” she urges. “Put
this horse, western gear and all, out
on the trail where he belongs,” she
adds.
“The Great West has gone pleasure
horse crazy, getting themselves out of
the rush, rush, mechanized world and
that’s great,” she concludes. “Let all
us little guys (and the big guys too)
walker the public into the ‘new fron­
tier’ make the words Trail Horse syn­
onymous with Walking Horse.”
