Green Shelbyville, Tenn. Tennessee Walking Horse Lovers/ League Organized For Pleasure Horse Promotion Organization of a public welfare, non-profit corporation to promote the Tennessee Walking Horse breed—es pecially as a pleasure horse—was com pleted on Feb. 17, 1962 at Shelbyville, Tenn., with election of officers. It is named the Tennessee Walking Horse Lovers’ League of America, Inc. Major reason for this name, it was explained, is that every person who loves a horse—any horse or horses—is eligible. Members do not necessarily have to own horses or even ever to have ridden a horse. All they do is admit to loving a horse, officials said. “We do not want any horse-haters in our organization, unless we can re form them," they said. Officers, all from Shelbyville, are: President, William S. Russell, at torney, former Mayor of Shelbyville and chairman of the Celebration Ad visory Committee; Vice-president, Edward C. Huffman, president of the First National Bank of Shelbyville (see back cover of this magazine for mention of his daughter, Sally D. Huffman); Treasurer, William L. Parker, presi dent of the Peoples National Bank of Shelbyville, a member of the Cele bration Executive Committee since it was formed in 1939, currently vice- president of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration and past- president of the Shelbyville Lions Club; Secretary, Leland C. Fritzsche, feed dealer and member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibi tors’ Assn., formerly Bedford County director of this group before its by laws were changed in May, 1961; Executive Secretary, Ben A. Green, member of the Shelbyville Times-Ga- zette (daily) editorial staff, author of the Biography of the Tennessee Walk ing Horse (book), and Editor of the Voice of the Tennessee Walking Horse (magazine), “Details of this corporation are yet to be developed in a legal sense but we are ready for action," said Green. “At the organization meeting we authorized the treasurer, William L. Parker, to receive any funds volun teered from any source in behalf of the league. It has no money at all in the treasury now. Treasurer Parker is authorized to receive dedicated funds which will be used only for the proj ects specified. Donations to the general fund will be appreciated. A charter of incorporation was secured last sum mer from Tennessee Secretary Joe Carr. Donations are fully deductible under provisions of the U. S. Dept, of Internal Revenue.” Green said forming this organi zation is merely another step in his proposed “Crusade for the Tennessee Walking Horse" as set out in his book—Biography of the Tennessee Walking Horse. He said he thought the immediate projects will be to take steps to pro vide for a Tennessee Walking Horse Museum and Library situated in Shelbyville.
