1930'S

Bathing Suits

Bathing suits that hugged a women's body have been in style since the 1920's. In the 1930's, bathing suits exposed more skin and used less material than the decade before. Swimsuits were one piece and cut low on the neck and high on the legs. Designers used knitted and elasticized fabrics that were tight on a women's body. Some bathing suits were even bare-backed. There is also a resemblance between conservative bathing suits today and bathing suits from the 1930's.

Esther Williams is an Olympic swimmer and actress from America who wore more glamorous bathing suits. These types of suits can be seen in her water ballet which was featured in many movies of the time. Her role in Hollywood movies inspired the trend of wearing more fashionable bathing suits.
