IN 19TH CENTURY EUROPE

The Bridge - 1861 - Erasmus+

It's the 19th century and the Ljubljana Philharmonic Society has obtained the main role in organizing concerts and educating mainly Slovenian and German musicians and music lovers. The first Slovenian composers of romantic music are Jurij Mihevc, Gašpar Mašek, Alojz Ipavec and Jožef Tomažovic Jr.

The revolution that started in France because the politicians refused to expand the very limited right to vote, triggered unrest among the people and as a consequence a revolution has been spreading all over Europe. The revolution even came to Ljubljana on 16th March 1848 and is still going strong.

But in all the chaos Slovenians have begun to feel a sense of nationalism beginning to grow in their midst. They want to be faithful to their homeland, and only want to listen to and sing simple Slovenian music that everyone can understand. This takes music back to the pre-romantic era with composers Jurij Flajšman, Emil Adamič, Fran Levstik, Benjamin Ipavec and Davorin Jenko, just to mention a few.
