Antun Mihanovic

Antun Mihanovic was a notable Croatian poet and diplomat (10 June 1796, Zagreb – 14 November 1861, Novi Dvori, Klanjec).

He is the most famous for writing the verses for the Croatian national anthem – Lijepa naša domovino (Our Beautiful Homeland).

Mihanovic studied law in Zagreb. He worked as a jurist, a military judge and as an administrative clerk. After engaging in diplomacy in 1836, he was the Austrian consul in Belgrade, Solun, Smyrna, Carigrad and Bucharest. He retired in 1858 as a minister counselor, and lived in Novi Dvori until his death.

His brochure Reč domovini od hasnovitosti pisanja vu domorodnom jeziku (A Word to the Homeland about the Benefits from Writing in Mother Tongue), published in 1815, became one of the foundations of the Illyrian Movement.
