SINN FÉIN
UCC Sinn Féin (Martin Hurson Cumann) is a youth
branch of the national Sinn Féin Party. It is the most
active political society in University College Cork and
one of the most active and successful youth cumainn in
Ireland. Our goal is to establish a 32 County democratic
socialist republic based on the principles outlined in the
1916 Proclamation and the Democratic Programme of
the First Dáil. We have a great year ahead planned
including our Republican Culture week and Solidarity
week, a week where we celebrate our

solidarity with other countries seeking independence
and extend an invitation to international speakers to
UCC. We in UCC Sinn Féin are always welcome to new
members. As we are also dedicated to having the craic
and have a great year of fun ahead planned including
culture tours and bonding trips across Ireland outlined!
As well as that we will be taking part in many on campus
events, taking part in and hosting debates and holding
on campus campaigns. Hope to see you signing up soon
and joining us for our fantastic year ahead!

SOCIAL SCIENCE
The Social Science Society has made a stunning come-back in
recent years. Revived as a society last year we were seen as
somewhat of an underdog in the college but throughout the year
we made sure that would change. Our aim is to organise events
in UCC and the greater college and Cork city area for students
who are both academically involved in the social sciences and
those who are not. The Social Science Society strives to find
balance between our two main focuses: 1) Raising awareness
around social issues and issues of social justice and organising
events to compliment this. In previous years we have held events
such as an open discussion on campus around

50
the topic of direct provision in Ireland with various speakers of
influence (including people from outside the campus) attending
and taking part in the lively discussion. 2) Hosting various
social events such as nights out and a ball which was a big
success in the previous year as well as a multi-year class party.
These events are intended to welcome first years in the social
sciences to the college and introduce them to the students of the
same vocation as well as bringing students from various other
disciplines. We hope to expand the members of the society even
further with incoming students and students who are already a
number of years through their degree program.
