PHYSICS
The UCC Physics and Astronomy Society looks after all
things Physics in UCC. The societies aim is to promote
Physics to students, and give them an opportunity
to socialise with others interested in Physics. Physoc
organises many talks throughout the year on a wide range
of topics in Physics. These talks suit people with both a
basic knowledge of Physics as well as a more advanced
understanding. Naturally, milk and cookies are always
provided! The society also plans star gazing nights where
you can observe astronomical events through telescopes,

and rocket launches during a weekend trip, where
everyone is invited. Last year, Physoc took a trip to Geneva,
Switzerland to visit the CERN super collider. The society
also holds social events, such as a ball, a formal, film
screenings and quizzes.Other annual events include a
‘Students vs Lecturers’ competition, where students battle
lecturers in a selection of physical and mental challenges.
There’s also the Fermi Prize, a quiz where the competitors
answer questions such as ‘How many standard rubik’s
cubes would fit in an Olympic-sized swimming pool?’

PLANNING
Have you an interest in the natural and built environments around
you? If so, you should join the UCC Planning Society! We host a
variety of fun-filled and intellectual events on the UCC Campus, in
Cork City and further afield which include conferences, field trips
and socials! The UCC Planning Society is an active academic
society concerned with the social welfare of communities as well
as the welfare of the natural and built environments; and our goal
as a Society is to foster the knowledge, practice, and advocacy
of planning, as well as community, amongst Planning Society
members and the wider body of UCC. We aim to provide these
goals through improved information sessions,

46
practical workshops, and informative day trips/field trips. Our
biggest annual event is our Planning Conference and Ball.
Each year, our Planning Conference discusses the current and
important issues affecting our natural and built environments,
and attracts the biggest names in the field of Planning! After our
conference, we celebrate with our Planning Ball and we try to
out-do ourselves each year to make every Planning Ball better
than the last! If you’ve liked what you’ve read, and want to join
an informative and exciting society – join in on the action and
get involved with the Planning Society! Don’t forget to like our
Facebook page for event information and competitions!
