DAVID O’LEARY UCC Societies Officer I would like to congratulate you on choosing University College Cork for your studies and I hope your time here is filled with many happy memories that will last a lifetime. UCC Societies are at the core of student life both on and off the campus and in fact the very first society in UCC was established in 1850 when a mere 115 students were enrolled in the University. Times have certainly changed and with over 20,000 students currently enrolled, we now have over 100 registered societies in UCC for you to choose from so have a browse through this Societies Guide for a full list of each one and with so many to choose from you’re sure to create your own piece of history. Societies are student run, free to join and open to all students of the University. They enable you to seek out unusual skills, continue hobbies of old, rekindle a past passion, run for a position on a society and of course make loads of new friends. Getting involved in societies makes a real impact during your time in college. 4 It can also give you the opportunity to travel and represent the University at a national and international level. In my conversations with society alumni, a common theme mentioned has been the sense of community and belonging that one feels through their involvement with societies - the people that one meets, the opportunities available and the many thing you will learn outside of the lecture halls. This University is brimming with possibilities and opportunities to get involved and experience new things. In fact, it’s so good you have to remember one thing – your years in UCC are all too short and time will simply fly by. I thank you again for choosing University College Cork and I hope you enjoy your time here. The Societies Office team are here to help and assist you throughout the year. I can assure you fun will be had, life skills learnt along the way and true friends will be made with memories etched forever. Yours in Societies, David O Leary SOCIETIES OFFICER
