8vo. 16cc n.n. 18th c. vellum binding, marbled end-leaves, possibly executed for
Giacomo Soranzo, owner of the book since 1736. Monogram H (for HYPNEO) inked
on front cover. A very light stain on the inside margin, last leaf with an old
restoration, touching one text letter, executed at the of binding. PRINTED ON
BLUE ROYAL THICK PAPER.
PROVENANCES:
FERRETTA GIULIA: dedicatee of the work, she received the copy as a gift from the
author for their possible extra marital affair. We have no reliable sources on Giulia
Ferretta unless there are some quotes from 16th c. writers describing her in their
works. Among those we can mention LANDO ORTENSIO Sette libri de Cathaloghi.
Venice, Giolito de Ferrari 1553 - page 476: "non solo è donna d’honore ma è anche poetesse
gentile", LANDO ORTENSIO La sferza de scrittori antichi e moderni. Venice, Andrea
Arrivabene 1550 - page 22: "non posso contenermi ch'io non ammiri la singolar prvdentia di
M. GIVLIA FERRETTA, la quale, havendo et poeti, et philosofi per le mani; et havendo
scritto et versi et prose senza fine, niuno si puo dar vanto d'haver giamai veduto cosa verune del
suo istampata”; GIROLAMO TIRABOSCHI Storia della letterstura italiana . Modena,
Società tipografica 1779 - page 53: "Alda Torella Lonata insieme con Giulia Ferretta e con
Isabella Gonzaga da Gazzuolo sono altrove lodate dal Landi come Donne erudite, ma che nulla
hanno voluto dare alla luce”. Despite the praises of her contemporaries and friendships
with scholars and nobles of the time, we only have fragmented information about
Giulia Ferretta. We know she was the wife of Emilio Ferretti, a well-known
jurisconsult of the 16th c., whose origins are in Marche, from Castel Ferretto.
Imagining that surname FERRETTA is the feminine interpretation of her husband
