Institution , after St . Joseph the glorious spouse of of the Blessed Virgin Mary .
Owing to Father Beurel ' s substantial personal commitments in getting a piece of land along Victoria Street and Bras Basah Road for a Convent , Bishop Boucho decided to delay the construction of the actual building . The Bishop wrote that he thought there should be a little breathing time , and that it should stand over for two to three years . However , the result was that work on the building was delayed for over eleven years !
In 1865 , a self-imposed responsibility of Brother Lothaire was to set to work on detailed plans and the means to fully achieve Father Beurel ' s dream . Some of the Brothers ' property on Government Hill ( Fort Canning ) was disposed of and the
Colonial Government promised to supply the bricks at the same cost as to themselves .
However , this promise was not fully carried out as the building of the new Government House required so many bricks that the promise to the school was set aside before the building was finished .
The Colonial Government approved Brother Lothaire ' s plan to erect a building 149 feet long , 61 feet wide and 32 feet high . This was completed on 15th August 1867 at an agreed price of $ 8,600 . When the demolition of the then existing classes began in November 1866 , classes were held in Father Beurel ' s house and in attap houses as circumstances allowed .
