2104 Pelandok Scout Group
The 2104 S . J . I . Pelandok Scout Group was founded in 1950 by a teacher , Mr . James Tseng , who popularly came to be known as ' Pelandok '.
We began as a Scout Group with 4 patrols , but the running of the Group was most difficult as the the Scout Masters , Messers James Tseng , Philip Tan , Julian Chan and Tan Song Chuan were very inexperienced . With the arrival , advice and help of Mr . Michael Chong , a Gillwell-trained Scout attached to the National Headquarters , things began to take shape . It took the Fourth Singapore Group ( as we were then known ) only a few months to become one of the best Scout Groups in Singapore . In the following years , it became necessary to start a Senior Group as a follow-up for older members . Soon after , we started a Rover Crew as well . We approached the Principal of St . Michael ' s School in 1958 to recruit members for a Cub Scout Unit and our Group became complete . We then became known as the 2104 Scout Group .
Soon the enrolment was too big for the Group to run as a single Unit . Bro . Joseph Kiely , then a teacher and a Scout known as ' Hippo ', therefore started the 2103 S . J . I . Group . Four of our capable patrol leaders went over as well to become the pioneers of the new brother Scout Group .
The training scheme and programme of the Group was still in its initial stages but nevertheless we had a wide range of activities . Our members also frequently attended overseas Jamborees and up till now , they have been to Malaysia , Thailand , Australia and Japan . With the subequent resignation of our Scouters from the teaching profession , it became necessary to depend on our Pre-University students to help run the Group . This was indeed a giant step forward . The Rover Crew was disbanded in 1967 in accordance with Headquarters pol icy . However the partial loss of hard working Scout leaders and brother Rovers did not deter us from making further progress because our Assistant Scout Leaders ( the Pre-Un iversity students ) were well prepared for action .
With the changing of times , we too changed for the better . The first thing we did was to revise all our policies and our training scheme as well to include hitherto unexplored activities like archery and abseiling . Outdoor activities took prominence and scouting skills were standardised to a higher level . In a matter of a few months , we began to reap the fruits of our work . Three members , Phey Yew Koon , Johnson Tan Chin Kwang and Chee Peng Hock obtained the much-coveted Chief Commissioners Award . The Venture Scouts too , had their fair share of success . Ee Boon Heng successfully completed h is Venture Scout Standard and obtained h is Four Bars . He has been recommended for the prest : gious President Scout Award . Many more Scouts and Ventures are now very close to obtaining these awards . Our Scout Leaders were not to be left out . Our Group Scout Leader , Mr . James Tseng , received the Distinguished Service Award while three of our Assistant Scout Leaders , Chan Kum Yew , Felix Li and Christopher Fernandez , received their Wood Badges . To add even more to our credit , Fel ix Li was appointed Assistant District Commissioner and was also invited to sit on the National Training Committee . With the Group carefully and well looked after , we began to encourage voluntary social work . In 1975 , we combined with our sister Guides from the 6th and 16th Company Central , St . Anthony ' s Convent , to organise several visits to Orphanages , Homes and Social Institutions . In the following year , we held a Charity Concert at the Cultural Centre and managed to raise approximately $ 2000 . This was also a combined project with our sisters from S . A . C .
In an effort to boost our relations with our sister Guides and to train us in Leadership , a Leadership Course , approved by both National Movements , was conducted in our school grounds . It proved to be a great success and the Executive Commissioner of the Singapore Scout Association , Mr . Robert Yeo Keng Teck , presented certificates to the participants at the end of the course .
As our main aim and objective is to train our boys to be able and capable citizens , we equip them to be , as Scouts , good friends to everyone and to help others by their example and influence . As time passes , we too will pass , but will continue to introduce all that is helpful and relevant to achieve the highest possible standard in the training of our boys . Not until then will we sit back , relax a Iittle , and feel satisfied .
