NCC ( AIR )
The National Cadet Corps ( Air ) of S . J . I . celebrates its twenty first Anniversary this year .
In March 1956 . two teacher officers and thirty cadets formed the nucleus of the First Squadron , S . J . I ., then known as the Malayan Air Training Corps . Later in the year , another teacher joined the Corps . The teachers were given six months training at RAF Changi after which they were commissioned as Pilot Officers . The recruits had to undergo weekly training for one year , after which they had to sit for a written examination . Those who passed were accepted as cadets in the Corps .
In 1958 , the strength of the SJI Unit increased to 150 . These cadets were divided into 3 Flights of 50 cadets each .
From 1956 to 1958 , training was carried out at the Malayan Auxiliary Air Force HQ at the old Kallang Airport . In 1959 , the ATC HQ was transferred to Kolam Ayer . In 1969 , The Air Training Corps was absorbed into the National Cadet Corps ( Air ). Initially , training was held at Seletar Air Base but its present Headquarters is at the Tangl in Complex .
At present there are 120 cadets and NCOs selected from Secondary Two to Secondary Four . Training is centralised at Air Training Centres at Tanglin , Haig Road and Queensway . All cadets are given a chance to attend at least one Annual Camp and two week-end Camps , during which , visits are made to the various Air Bases to familiarise the cadets with the various Sections of the Air Force . Secondary Four cadets are given lectures and practical training in technical , air and allied subjects . Whenever possible , they are given flying experience by the Junior Flying Club : Many cadets from the Corps have obtained overseas Scholarships to study Aero-engineering and related subjects . Two cadets have obtained their Private Pilot License .
Officers who have served the Corps are : Flight Lt . Patrick Goh 1956 to 1961 Flying Officer Wee Eng Poh 1962 to 1971 Major Dominic Vip 1956 to present date . Major Tony Chee 1956 to present date . Major Dominic Yip has been seconded to HQ NCC to be the Commander NCC ( AI R ). Major Tony Chee is at present the Squadron Commander of Squadron 04 . With dedication and drive , NCC ( AI R ) SJI hopes to achieve greater success in the future .
